    Donaldson Pre Cleaner

What is the recomended size for an Isuzu Pre cleaner.

75mm at 170 cfm or the High Flow at 320 cfm.

Are you thinking of a swirl bowl precleaner? If so, check with a Donaldson Duralife outlet. Donaldson used to recommend their use only on stationary or slow moving plant.

    Thanks for the reponse Brian.

I was offered a Donaldson Air Pre Cleaner from a fellow club member , part number P13-6115 for a similar price to a cheaper evilbay item.

I took a quick look on evilbay and found two types.

A 75mm standard flow , plastic bowl and metal cap number for around $ 45 and a 75mm Hi Flow that was of a similar construction but $85.

I would run a standard intake for everyday driving and just fit the Donaldson for any dusty area trips.

Not sure now whether to buy the club membr one or an evilbay one.

i used a pre cleaner on my 300tdi instead of the scoop and imho it was better than the air ram.

i know not how but it was. i had a 75mm one on it and it's only downside was every few hours in heavy rain you had to stop and empty it :P

if i had a snorkle i would be putting one on again.

Check the specs on Donaldson's website.

The larger/hi flow would likely have a lower pressure drop, however not be as efficient at removing particles, due to lower are velocities.

You will definitely need to use the high flow per-cleaner the smaller one will be too small. Airflow requirement for a 4BD1T is 275 cu ft/min

The formula for 4 cycle engine airflow is:-

(engine size in cubic inches x rpm / 3456) x volumetric efficiency

Assumed volumetric efficiency for an OHV naturally aspirated diesel engine is .90 and for a turbo version is 1.6

I make the number 352 for a 4BD1T, 238 cubic inches, governed at 3200 rpm.

I need to correct the figure that I gave - 320 cu ft/min is closer to the mark (Revs are (I think) at a nominal 3000 RPM). The figure of 275 Cu ft/min is the nominal capacity of the 8" Donaldson fitted to the Isuzu Counties, and the minimum rated capacity for an airfilter for a 4BD1T. As as I remember the Donaldson rating is at 80% dust load, so therefore flow rates for a clean filter would be considerably higher and thus the filter is suitable for the 4BD1T applicaiton
