Thread: 4BD1-LT95 Crunchy Clutch

G'day everyone again!

On the drive I recently did from Townsville to Newcastle, about hlaf way I discovered a sound that was like I had a big piece of fencing wire wrapped around a propellor shaft. Upon furter investigation it seems as though possibly 1 of the springs in the clutch plate have come loose and are rattling around inside the bellhousing .

When going slow and powering off, then back on again, I could hear what sounded like a spring being chewed up each time I did it.

What is concerning is that the clutch was replaced about 40,000 k's ago by the guy I bought it off .

I was wondering weather this is a normal interval for a clutch to die or not.

I also managed to drive all the way from 'Miles' in QLD to Newcastle towing a trailer with this problem. The worst thing was stopping at traffic lights and starting again. Also driving up steep hills would see all the fillings in your mouth rattled out with vibration . Nasty!

Anyway... Any advice would muchly be appreciated.

I actually found it to be the front transfer end uni joint rather than the clutch! Thank goodness! The roller bearings had dissintegrated and left the poor old uni rubbing metal on metal for 1050 klms! It was a big drive. All in all it is much cheaper to fix.

You are lucky - you definitely do not want to have the front prop shaft let go at speed, which is the likely result with a U-joint with rollers missing. That experience is likely to be a lot more expensive than a new clutch. I have heard of U-joints letting go only minutes after they start making a noise.
