When I was 12, I used to drive my grandfather's Ford Custom 300 to the servo in Calamvale to get petrol.

Nah, there was the Custom 300 and the Fairlane 500. I think (not sure) that the Oz 300 had a 6-cylinder engine. It was well over 60 years ago that I drove that.
That was back when I had a Morris Z that I used to drive to a friend's place along Beaudesert Rd in Calamvale. Well before I was 16 when I drove my unregistered 1938 Vauxhall in 1964 from Calamvale (Qld) to St Marys in Sydney's west.

Obviously youth crime in not a new phenomenon.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
A bit before that time a friend of my father got into trouble after his truck was spotted driving past the police station in Parramatta apparently without a driver - his 12yo son was pretty short and could barely see over the dash.
My driving experience before getting a learner's was limited to the back paddock except for one occasion when I was asked to move the car to the end of the road in the face of an approaching fire (Dad stayed to defend the house).

We didn’t do much driving before we got our licenses either,
Although the S1 used to go for a small jaunt up and down the driveway on the starter every now and then.
Guns were more our go,I will never forget the day we decided to take the 12 gauge up into what is now the Daisy Hill state forest.
Not only did we get bruised shoulders,we couldn’t hear well for a day or two,it scared the **** out of us.
A bit different to the air rifle and .22 we were used to.
