Jason, I have a little tale to tell you, from work yesterday afternoon - just for a little bit of perspective on life and relationships. It's a sad tale, so consider yourself forewarned!
I received a phone call quite late into the day (I was ready to go leave to go home in about 15-20mins time) from the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital for an urgent scan - now, as soon as I knew it was someone from ICU, I knew what test they would be wanting from us that they couldn't wait until the next day for - it was a test to evaluate for brain death.
Now, I've been involved in a couple of these now, and as you can probably appreciate they are just awful, there really are no words to describe what it feels like to see a patient come down with all the life support stuff attached, and know that from a medical perspective they are still alive, but the simple fact of the matter is that when they come for this scan, they almost always will be leaving as dead. As you can imagine, pretty gut-wrenching to be involved in.
Anyway, to relate it back to you, and thus the whole point of it all - it was a quite young patient, a lady in her early 30's. Her husband came down by her side. They both had lots of tatts which I guess is why I thought of you and Karen in the first place - anyway, I talked to her husband whilst we did the scan, and he said that she had left the house after an argument they'd had about him suspecting she'd been off with a mutual friend - she'd collapsed whilst out, was taken to hospital and suffered basically a massive stroke.
I guess the point of this little tale is - **** the past, concentrate on the future, and at the end of the day, make sure everyone you care about knows how you feel, and just make the most of now, because there may not be a tommorow for you to tell the person you love how you feel, and most of all, no regrets, learn and move on.
I learnt the no regrets thing quite early - when I was a bit younger, I went through a few lots of heart surgery, and had to be ressucitated at one point. After that experience, I know what it feels like for any day to be your last, so you make the most of it, and don't dwell on the past, I just make the most of now and the future.
Now, in my little story above, the ending is only improved by the fact that she was an organ donor, and all the organs looked to be unaffected.
For everyone else reading, I guess everyone could use it to put some things in perspective.
I'm obviously pretty shaken by it - I'm only human after all, but I also know the situation could have been worse, some other reasons we've done this scan in the past - drivers racing each other or just someone driving recklessly and hitting a tree/post etc., people playing with guns and accidentally shooting themself or someone else in the head. I guess life really is a fragile thing and we have to make the most of it, both for ourselves, and those around us.
I know I'll be telling my partner that I love her tonight, and for her to make sure she knows how I feel, despite our ups and downs.
Banjo, that sad story from Sean87, makes memories come flooding back to me of that fatefull night in May 1974 when my first wife suffered a massive asthma attack and literally collapsed in my arms, her last words to me were "Jim, I can't breath". She collapsed onto the floor of our house and I tried to give her mouth to mouth. She turned blue and in a panic I rang the ambulance and she was taken to Royal Newcastle Hospital and placed on life support. She was in a coma for a week and the doctors told me that because of the lack of oxygen to her brain, even if she recovers, she will be a vegetable. I was absolutely devastated ( and I still have flashbacks and nightmares about it).
She died a couple of days later without recovering and she was only 27 years of age, hadn't even lived yet.
I guess what I am trying to do is reinforce Sean's message and my favourite sayings nowadays are "Nothing is set in concrete" and " Everything is temporary".
Another thing too, is my daughter who was only 6 at the time saw this and it has badly effected her too. My son who was a baby at the time does not remember his mum and it has badly effected him also, he has a tattoo on his arm with his mums name and the dates 1946to 1974.
Banjo................................... enjoy what you have got while you have got it, it is all only temporary.![]()
