off the back or the side

Whats peoples thoughts or preferences for camper tops as in which way they come off. Off the back, or off the side?
Only asking as i'm looking into building a new camper after my old one burnt down in the bush fires.
I've had both, and for sleeping i think i prefer off the back, but for kitchen set up and tent size off the side wins.
Also what are some good brands to look for (top only, building my own trailer, again)
    All comments welcome

    Hey Damien

We had a soft floor off the side (trailer was custom made -top was made by a guy in Cranbourne, name escapes me) and we went away in it for 4 months.

We have also used a Kimberley Kamper

Our view is that the hard floor are definately the way to go. We used to get a bit over cleaning the soft floor, especially when we were on the move alot and only staying 1 night. It seemed that it took just as long to clean the dirt from the underside (even with a ground sheet it got wet) as it did to pull down.
We loved how quick and easy the KK was. even set up in the slosh and mud.

But i'm not sure if you are only talkin soft floors so may have got off the track.
I think that off the side allows for a larger tent area - great if you have a large family etc. but uneccessary otherwise.
I dont think that the kitchen area or orientation matters, both work well if you have an awning and some side walls
Sleeping can be an issue with off the side as you have to climb over each other

    My vote is the Tvan

Thats the selling point for off the back! I don't always like the missus climbing on me.
Never thought about the hard floor option, can't be that hard to make.

I think that with a big enough shed anything is possible!!
It would be good to have one to copy off.
KK are definatley well made - not sure about the price though. about $25000 overpriced

Another advantage of a 'hard floor' camper is that you don't have to be as selective about the terrain you set up on.

I would love to see any ideas of how to use a standard 7 x 4 off road trailer, and hook a hard floor tent set up to it. Then still be able to convert it back to a working trailer without too much fuss. I'm a carpenter, so can build a frame, and floor, but just don't know what sizes would work for a standard tent set up.
    Thanks,

    Ken
