Hi Bigcarle - I am in the process of buying a Castle Camper for $10,100. What are your thoughts on your ? What type of suspension do you have 4 leaf ? Also have you taken it off road if so how did it handle.

    Thanks

    Darren

ive got the semi off road suspension,
AFAIR that was 4WD drive wheels heavier axle and heavier springs.
full off road was the same only with longer, thicker springs
i haven't really taken it off road.
we are only going to be on road but maybe some rough dirt but on road hence the uprated suspension
it tows behind the disco quite well with out any dramas.
very roomy and good equipment IMHO
mine cost a shade over $8k
did you go to the Brisbane caravan show?
forgot to add that we are happy with it

Hi bigcarl – if you are still curious about weight or your camper - (and not far from me), the Redlands Tip (Old Cleveland Rd East) will weigh it for a fee. However I’ve been in twice lately, both times on a Friday pm and let the operator know that “I do not need a certificate” and not been charged… You might be surprised how heavy it is with all your gear.

    Mine is 980kg.

thanks harlie, didnt think of them as usually you have to be a resident to use the tip, but on the other hand if its a public weighbridge i would be able to go there.
i am only going on the rego papers for the basic weight of my camper of 600kg and with table, chairs and misc trappings to be around the 750kg mark.

I concur with a few others, you'll be surprised ( or horrified as I was) if you take your loaded camper trailer over a weighbridge.

We have a custom camper trailer (ie custom made heavy duty 7x4 box trailer with a longer than normal drawbar, ebay camper trailer tent, full Drifta fitout kitchen and storage box, 5kG gas bottle, two 20L jerry holders, dual deep cycle batteries and 12V wiring, 60l underfloor water tank, storage box on drawbar along with spare, electric drum brakes,..... and a few more things) and I recently took it to the local weighbridge........

    Results were:

    Discovery 1, 300tdi auto, 3/4 tank of fuel, empty roof rack and recovery gear in back: 2.08 tonnes;
Camper trailer with all of the above (no water in tank or fuel in jerries): 1.27 tonnes

    Cheers

Just arrived: 2012 D4 3.0 HSE, the journey begins again ;-).
Gone: 98 Disco 300tdi Auto, and some extras

i guessed that would be around the figure (base disco being 1960KG) with some extras on board, apart from the weight i supply there is a TJM steel bullbar and a ARB towbar
thanks for that info though, very handy

ouch, thats what surprised me with mine i think my head was still in box trailer mode but the camper tent weighs a helluva lot more and i noticed it with the disco

My camper was 1.2 dry, add 95 kg of water, 2 x20ltr jerries of fuel, awfully loaded engel, annex bits, gas bottles and all the other stuff I recon it came in at 1.6 to 1.7 at least. The worst part of it was there was about 180kg on the drawbar and all the extra weight added (accept the water tank) also went over the drawbar. i would estimate a drawbar weight fully loaded at 450 kg at least (it used to buckle the biggest jockey I could buy).

My 2010 defender pulled it ok but given the length if the drawbar and the weight it dragged it's bum over the washouts and was " uncomfortable" to tow off road so...... Now it's gone!

Good news is I pick up my new ultimate camper next Wednesday....I hope that's a little more capable off road...
