We bought HQ 12" (IIRC) brake drums (electric style), they have a PCD that is 0.6mm larger than D2 but as mentioned above the nuts have enough play in them to accept this as they don't locate on it. As they were electric hubs we had our engineer mill them to counterbore the studs in from behind. While the studs were out the hub was turned in the lathe (I can't remember if we did that or he did) and also a 12 or 16mm spacer was made up so the centre of the alloys (where the hubcap goes in) does not fowl on the dust cap for the hubs and also to space out the track due to the LR offset. The spacer slid on over the long studs we used (buggers me why people don't just do this for their cars)

I can't remember if we made the centre spigot separately (as you do on unbraked hubs) or it was turned from the brake drum. But either would work of there was enough metal.

I don't know what all the fuss is about, I've had D2/P38 alloys on my camper for 5yrs now, started off with 9" drums and now have discs on the camper, I just bought some Commadore trailer discs and had them drill to fit the M14 studs, I then ground the D2 wheel nuts flat so the didn't go all the way to the inside of the rim and all has been good for 18mths now, I'm looking at the 10" electric hubs next and putting the 17" BMW rims on.

I haven't ground the inner hole out to fit, I even have the bearing cap on the end, clears by about 2 to 3mm.

You'll find out one day when you're traveling down a corrugated dirt road and your wheel overtakes you...

I've explained it too many times on different threads, have a read please.

Probably because wheel spacers aren't legal in Australia.

Incidentally I fitted D2 steel wheels to my trailer today (unbraked as its only for a dune buggy). Not a hard job at all.

    Will,

Just out of interest, what sort of dune buggy do you have?

I'm having difficulty imagining the size of a buggy that when on a trailer with D2 wheels will have a combined mass of 750Kg or less.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

I meant the comp trucks that run them, rather than having the offset studs it would make more sense to have then going the whole way through.

And then in this case isn't a brake disc just a 'spacer'??? So is it legal to have longer studs and thicker discs? To effectively widen the track so you can run standard wheels?

Diana, it's an Edge Products 'Mini Sprint', it's a mini buggy only 600cc's, built it myself in 2010 and based off a Yamaha road bike.

The trailer is 300 odd kg's and I'd say the buggy would sit around the 350kg mark aswell, the whole combo wouldn't push the limits of the laws at all, the trailer is a 10x5'6" single axle box trailer. That was custom built for the buggy. It replaced a big old tuza dual axle box trailer (stupidly heavy for something that the weight of a big quad) and its so we can avoid towing the car trailer everywhere (also single axle, but BEEF)

    Cheers

Good luck with getting anything out of AlKo quickly

I sent up a Defender wheel 16mm stud about a month ago for them to see if they could fit it to a hub (instead of the smaller 14mm usual stud they usually use) and I STILL have not heard back from them with a yes or no, and that's after 4 or 5 phone calls.

In the end I have given up and am just making my trailer with Land Cruiser wheels.

If anything is slightly different, or a little bit complicated, no-one wants to invest any energy into solving it. No wonder Australian manufacturing is going down the gurgler....

Alko's response to my inquiry indicated that they are not interested in modifying their parallel hub to take D3/4 rims, referring only to possible Alko warranty implications if a hub is modified. I think the person missed the significance of producing such hubs as a standard item. I'll continue with my inquiries as time permits, including having hubs made as suggested by 1 trailer manufacturer.

I've waited almost 6yrs now, how much longer do I need to wait.

I've done the Simpson, High country tracks, Flinders Ranges, the Gulf, the Cape via the OTL and the development Rd, Oodnadatta Tr, the Strez, Gawler Ranges, I've lost count of the amount of corragated dirt roads I've been, some so bad the dash in the car was a blur.

I think it's been tried and tested, whatta ya reckon, or should I wait a bit longer

OK well it's been a bit longer, here we are on our Simpson trip in 05
