Thread: offroad hitches?

Good old fashioned pintle hook for me.. Despite what people told me, it makes very little noise if the trailer is loaded properly, and is a snap to hitch - unlike some. Cons - it can be noisy on rough terrain, but I think I have got a solution or that - it only bangs when the hitch moves upwards - over bumps and the like. No noise on the road at all. Gluing a small plastic insert in the top of the hitch should sort that I would think, but it isn't a huge bother.

Not many use these any more, so the chance of theft would be reduced too.

My camper trailer came with a Chinese knock off of the Treg hitch. It has been to the Cape and back and done several thousand kilometres on top of that. The through shaft is just showing a bit of wear but that takes up when the unit is greased. I'm not promoting cheap Chinese products, just commenting that they aren't ALL bad.

Pintle Hook ? Aarrgghhh I hate them - the way you can pivot the hook in the ring when reversing without actually getting any direction change (is when not pushing)makes reversing a PITA !

DId that make sense? Probably not. ANyway Im not a fan.

If I ever get another trailer I'll look into those DO35 thingies....

i have never experienced any problems with pintl hooks and reversing

I have a poly block hitch. It is a Trigg coupling on the trailer with the Tregg on the car tow tongue.

I get a noise from the poly block rubbing on the car part of the hitch when doing slow tight turns. It is loud enough to hear with the windows up. So I wouldn't say they are quiet but there is no metal to metal noise.

I wouldn't get another one. Plenty of others to try.

Never had that issue either. The trailer being very short and narrower than the 101 causes my reversing issues - not the pintle. Did you have both the hook and hitch set to rotate by any chance - that may cause it. Either the hitch OR he hook need to rotate - not both.

best if the pintle hook on the vehicle rotates; not the lunette ring on the trailer.
