Hot to touch gear box area and battery compartment area

    TD5 - 2005

Earlier this year April/May we did a trip to the Simpson, Alice Springs, etc.
Temperature wasn't too bad at that time of the year.

    • My wife started to notice the area of the Gear Box and Battery compartment very hot.

The heat didn't affect the driver's area or at least I didn't feel it as much.

This is the first time I noticed this and since we came back to Cairns we didn't notice it anymore.

The vehicle had a full service before the trip, all the oils where changed.

    • During this trip the vehicle also suddenly started to have difficulty in engaging gear first thing in the morning, I would have to look for a gear that engaged nicely and after that no problem for the rest of the day. This problem is still there today. I was advised that it's simply a "washer" in the Clutch and it wont cause more problems except first thing in the morning. Replacing it takes a lot of hours for an item that costs only a few bucks.

Would these two issues be related and could this be a sign of something starting to go seriously wrong.

    Were you towing anything ?

Do you know what type of oil they used in the gearbox,
it can make all the difference.

The heat from the exhaust can be enough to make the floor & seat box hot in high ambient temps, I don't think the issues are related.

Im making a series one style heat shield for my exhaust
where it goes under the floor / gearbox area.

below is pic of a series one exhaust , with mudsheild on front bit & heatsheild,
I wonder why they dropped this on later landys.

Im interested because we are about to do a 12 month round oz trip towing a trakmaster, normally we only go north in the cooler months.

Some on here have used exhaust tape to provide a thermal layer. It is a tape made with fibreglass in it and you will need to wet the tape and wear gloves to reduce the amount of fibres flying around and getting into your skin.

Don't know about the washer in the clutch comment, I'd be looking to see what oil is in the gearbox, it sounds like it is a little too thik when cold.

If this is an exact quote from your mechanic, change to someone else.

    However,
Perhaps "spiggot bush" was the suggested problem which can cause your gear selection issue and is about $4 and a gearbox or engine job to change.

This wont be a cause of heat buildup.

    cheers

    [snip]
This is ThermoTec wrap that goes to the back of the t/case on a 300Tdi with a 3" pipe.
This would be at least four years old now, and maybe five.

My guess is it is the exhaust, after 5 years of owning my 110 I always had a very hot floor & even into the back seat compartment, living in Dubai with average hotter temps than most places in Australia it was a problem, I had to move my Engel fridge which used to sit on the floor in the back seat area up onto blocks of wood due to the temp as it could not cope with the temp coming through the floor. About 6 months ago I removed the main muffler & fitted a straight through section of exhaust, & the drop in cabin floor temp was very notable, my Father who also owns a 110 in Australia also noted the difference & is also considering removing the centre section on his 110 prior to dragging a caravan up to the Kimberly's mid 2012.

Mechanic's jargon is not my forte, but i'm quite sure you are correct, that's what the mechanic meant, the "spiggot bush".
It also happens more often when the weather is cold. Now that we are in summer it's less frequent.

The exhaust suggestion seems to be it.

Thanks guys, I think you hit the nail in the head.

I didn't think of the exhaust, but it seems obvious.

Removing the Catalytic Converter would probably help as well, and improve performance (pity it's illegal), even though i already thought of doing it anyway.

Yep, we do have CATS in our Deefers. A cylindrical thing bellow the passenger's feet, on the exhaust pipe, (not the pan at the rear).

I don't know details but it seems Defenders in Australia had CATS (and EGRs) for a long time already.
