Yep, all TD5's definitely had EGR but I was unaware about the Cat ?

Must have only been some late ones as the ones I know of don't have one at all.

Pre 2002 did not have cats, my Farthers 2001 does not & my 2002 did.

Removing the cat & centre box will help the turbo spool a little quicker, noise in the cab is also only a bit louder on acceleration but no real difference whilst cruising, I was worried about it droning whilst cruising but it was not the case at all.

My 2004 TD5 Defender had the CAT and EGR removed before I bought it, as well as the front muffler. Weather its illegal or not does not seem to be a problem, PASSED RWC no questions asked , Even without CAT & EGR is still complies with emissions.

I just bought a 10m exhaust wrap from ebay

hope its enough, perhaps I should have bought their 30m roll.

    Some did, some didn't.

Oz got a batch of them with Cat and then nothing.. Some D2s got cats as well.

    IMHO just lose the cat

Been thinking of implementing some form of heat shield on my Tdi, the heat build up especially on the passenger side can (at times) make things uncomfortable on a long run.

A quick question for persons better qualified than I,

    - wrapping the exhaust looks like a great idea, but would it increase temperatures at the Turbo - EGT's or others ?

No, can actually drop EGT's as exhaust velocity is increased, although I can't put my hand on my heart and swear EGT's actually went either way.

Wrapping stainless steel isn't a good idea, it will fatigue crack it, but mild steel seems OK.

    My Exhaust wrap arrived yesterday.

Bugger to wrap with the exhaust on. Wear long sleeves & soak the wrap in water to stop the glass fibers going in your eyes. As is was my arms were itchy all day.

10m is enough to go from engine pipe flange to just past transfer case.

Went for drive today in 33 deg heat. Car 'seemed a fair bit cooler' to me but My wife who has to sit above the exhaust declared the car is MUCH cooler & needed the AC on 1 instead of the usual 3 for a hot day.

    Well worth doing !!

Ah - OK. Thanks for that.. I was about to do this. Is it safe to wrap /any/ grade of SS? I would like to keep the engine bay and seat box as cool as possible....

Stainless steel needs to be exposed to the oxygen for it to not rust. The surface gets a oxidized film on it and that prevents it from rusting.
