    AULRO Subscriber Offer - cheap on-road/off-road GPS units

    I've been bying these units DealExtreme: $103.76 5.0" LCD 372MHz CPU Windows CE 5.0 Bluetooth + GPS Navigator w/FM Transmitter + 2GB Maps SD for some time now (bought about 10 so far) for myself and friends/family. They work just fine, despite being Chinese "noname" (actually known as GlobusGPS). They come in at around $130 including delivery. I've now bought enough of them that I'm confident they're not dodgy.

    One downside is the default interface software - it's a bit clumsy, and IMHO damn ugly! Also, it only comes with road navigation software.

    But, the best thing is, after some modification, I clean this up and ultimately get it to run OziExplorer CE - and any other software supported by Windows CE, including the road software it's shipped with.

    I'm happy to modify them for AULRO members for free. This includes installing a much nicer "skin" (interface), installing the OziExplorer CE software (demo version - license is $40), and setting it up so when you click the GPS option, instead automatically running the Igo8 road navigation software, it pops up another menu with a choice of Igo8 or OziExplorer, plus a few other bits and pieces.

    Unfortunately, I can't supply off-road maps if they're copyrighted, but they're easy enough to put onto the SD card if you source them elsewhere yourself.

    The Hema on-road/off-road unit is similar to this, and has off road maps. However, it has a smaller screen, and costs about $800 more than the units I get.

    If you want units for other friends/family, I'm happy to help, but would appreciate something for my time it takes modifying them

    As a DIY alternative, I'll try and post a How To soon... then you can modify it yourself and save me doing it

    Great Little Unit and Even Greater Service

    G'day All

    I for one can vouch for these little great unit's that Ranga is offering.
    I have had mine now for about 2months and have not yet had any problems with it. I am currently running OziExplorerCE with off-road maps and can say its one powerful software. Ranga has helped me alot with the setup on the unit and he does a great job on doing so and has a overwhelming knowledge on both the unit's at hand and setting up the software for them and he is a great guy to boot

    Hi Ranga,
    I use a laptop with OziExp and have the 1:250,000 NatMap set.
    It would be great to have a smaller unit to use in dusty conditions, or even as a portable unit for walking.
    The DIY posting sounds like a great idea, and will volunteer to 'road test' your instructions before you post them if you like.
    I have never used Windows CE, so should be a suitably 'inexperienced' for the test.

    Is there enough interest to do a bulk purchase?

    I would be happy to act as coordinator for Hobart purchases, and even set the 'Hobart' units up if I can follow Ranga's instructions. (What am I doing?????)

    Just wondering if its possible to mark a track in the GPS, so I can have a database of tracks?

    I'm after a GPS that will do car navigation as well as mark tracks

    I have found one that will do this, the Magellan Crossover. But a bit exxy for me
