possibly where the ex rally support trucks go ?
Its a good site, and I've spoken to him a few times. Spudboy put me onto him. The ex overland Mercedes is of interest as its V8 and 6x6, but the cost is double what I want to outlay, and then there's the cost of shipping such a huge vehicle, and issues with getting a LHD vehicle into Oz. This is why I'm prob going down the Aus delivered prime mover option, which comes with the right engine, cab, chassis and rear axles. The only thing I have to source is a front axle and gearbox/transfer box. I have sourced two Merc front axles to choose from, and know for a MAN remote Transfercase which is 'stand alone'. Only issues are axle ratios, and the road ranger gearbox... (Fine for me but prob not for SWMBO). Ideal box would be the Merc EPS unit which suits the V8 well, is wife friendly and would sit in front of the MAN Transfercase. Just gotta find a suitable buyer for the 101....

i would love to buy your 101 Simon, but it would be an impulse and Heart not Head purchase!!!

Sadly it would never get the use it deserved....

I've just found this thread and had a read through. I did my HR licence in a Mercedes 2434. It was a great truck; great visibility and very comfortable, but dealing with the RoadRanger had a way of ruining that I'm guessing the smaller Schwere Klasse would be an even nicer drive.

Sure is! The one I've found is a baby.. 1222... 12 tonner, 220hp detuned V6, and a simple 6 speed ZF box. I was looking at a 2628 6x6 which had a 16 speed ZF.. but then this other one which is much newer (95) appeared. It's a lot lighter and will be much more wife friendly. Needs bigger wheels tho, and I want to throw a hub reduction axle under the front of it to match the rear! Once its home, I'll post some pics.

    Road trip...

Sooooo, I'm 3 hours into a road trip with my new toy! Its the nearest I've found here in Australia to what I want.. A 1995 Mercedes 1222. 12 tonne 220hp V6 NA. Simple 6 speed gearbox, and a separate Transferbox which has air shift high and low. Air switched diff locks in both axles, all of which works. 196000kms, and so far so good. There's a few things that need addressing, like the fuel gauge, the dipped beam is dismal, and all the crapmmeeds removing off the tray.

    Plans..

The few immediate things to do are rectify the candles that are the current lights.. (Spotties are good!), loose the stuff on the rear tray, and get it onto SA plates.. I'll prob derate it as if its under 12 tonnes gross, I believe certain things change....?! Also on the cards are some 22.5" rims and some larger drive axle tyres. The engine oil pressure is a little lower than I'd like but the oil is whistle clean, and it sounds very well for a V6, (which are renowned for sounding like crap)..

Down the track, once the rock retaining wall is built at the new place (using the Hiab), it and the tray will go, the axles will get a 100mm lift to bring them up to Euro AK spec, and a 'Spudboy' style box will go on the rear.
