Thread: Help needed, bad noise when difflock engaged...

I am afraid I cannot help you with your current problem , but I thought I would take the opportunity to introduce myself as a new member.

I have a 2009 D90 tdci, a 1996 300tdi Disco and a 1956 86inch over here in NZ.

We came over to Melbourne last week to your 4x4 show specifically to see what is available to enable us to get our vehicle sorted for an overland trek through the outback next year.

I was very impressed with the whole off road community over there and the fact that you guys are encouraged to get out and explore...Over here the Dept of Conservation is busy closing access to all the forests.

My question to you guys is:...Is the D90 big enough as a tourer for 2 people?

We toured through Kenya and Tanzania last year in a Disco run by Debs Thiele (Africa Expedition Support) and really enjoyed it...hence we intend to ship our truck over next year and head for the far north.

The cost of getting the Disco up to a touring standard just seems to be getting bigger and bigger!...especially after the Melbourne show!!

The noise could be a worn CV - in the ball/cage area. IRC you have the CVs with 17 mm balls?

On the axle front, are your axles martacked/retained? Maybe they are sliding too far in (and hence out of engagement with the CV)?

CV had some marks in the bell area but other than that was fine, the axle splines were worn out instead; now I fitted a brand new CV + axle and they only have 1 month of life, and just a day of wheeling!


Axles are not martacked nor retained, they don't accept a circlip...
If you remember when we did the Toy CV conversion, we simply slided the axle in and that was all.
I had zero issues since we did the job.

Michele, to test a CV you normally turn to full lock (either way) and that's where you'll hear the noise, you won't get it at the straight ahead (normally)

But why you are only getting a noise turning to the left ?

The tyre isn't rubbing the radius arm, is it ?
or hitting the diff breather tube that comes back up that side radius arm ?

dose it do it with the diff lock not engaged.

dose it make any noise when normal driving on the road.

did you change both left and right CV's and axles.

when you select center diff lock dose it engage correctly.

Centre diff lock engaged = more load on the CV's on hard ground. I would question why you don't switch off the centre diff lock as soon as you can after leaving soft ground. Left hand steering lock angles the LH CV joint more than on RH lock so more likely to click. If it doesn't click without the CDL engaged stop worrying.

2)no and no, tire makes a different noise when rubbing...

Ok this makes sense then.
But still I would like to understand why it makes the noise...I mean, I can understand the 5 years old CV to be a tad worn, fair enough, but this is brand new Rovertracks CV and has been running only for 1 month and 99% on tarmac!
I wheeled only 3, 4 days in one month and a half...on 33"s...

And no noise at all without the CDL engaged.

I wanna cry...
