At any given speed, say 100KPH, a bolt on overdrive does not increase the transfer box speed, that is set by the final drive (the diff and transfer box ratios and tyre sizes), what the overdrive does do is to reduce both the engine and gearbox revs used to achieve that road speed of 100KPH. The advantage of an overdrive compared to increasing the t/f box ratio or fitting larger diameter tyres, is that you can disengage the overdrive from the drivers seat at any time, returning you to normal ratios.
Not something you can do with tyres or t/f ratio changes.
