I may have some info, for comparative purposes. I fitted a finned and extended cooling plate to my LT230 and a temp gauge not really knowing what to expect. I was getting 140 - 145*C just normally cruising through Queensland in September/October. I am not sure if it got any hotter, as the gauge only went that high. Time to invest in a new gauge. I was not running an over drive. I am not even sure what would be considered "hot".

Put it this way, the oil cooler thermostats in a 300Tdi engine and R380 gearbox both open at 74*C.
If that's a representative temp in an LT230 we should all be running full synthetic fluids.
I know autos run pretty hot but I think that's at the damage end of temps for them too.
Thanks Rick for the info! I had totally forgot about it (Defender is parked up at the moment), until I stumbled upon this thread and thought that maybe My vehicle might be considered "Benchmark" - I.e no overdrive, "cooler" fitted and temp sensor.Quote:

Empty it would be 130*C and then gradually get hotter, didn't really cool down much - when I was loaded 2 persons and 300kg of gear, 140*C. I did notice that it very quickly rose to 90*C within 5 minutes of driving, and then it would slowly increase in temp until it hit 140*C and never really come down. Drove it in start stop traffic, highway, undulating terrane and over the hill to Warrick.

Dread to think what the LT77s was temp wise. Oil cooler time there I think too.
As I've mentioned elsewhere on here in the past, I've used a thermocouple on the by-pass tube of the R380 (the same spot as on an LT77, where the fluid goes from the pump up to the mainshaft when they don't have the t/stat housing installed ) and I think I hit 75* or so just 7km down the highway cruising @100km/h on a mild day.
Think I might fit the finned cover and temp gauge before I put the Roverdrive in and take it for a run, So that I can get a before and after Roverddrive temp with the same gauge.

No worries Paul I will post the temps when I get them, It might take two or three weeks though as have quite a lot on at the moment And have not bought the gauge yet.
Do you mind if I ask where you got your gauge and what it cost.( trying to plug the hole in my wallet )

Roverdrive are able to supply a temp gauge with all the fittings. I've got one here that I need to fit up soon. Interestingly the temp display only goes to 120.C.
The other option would be to fit a bolt on sensor, like a head temp sensor.
I'll be watching this with interest too fella's.
I've got a Watchdog TM2 for my engine and it's been great. I keep meaning to put one on the gearbox and it would work well for an overdrive, too.Quote:
