At any given speed, say 100KPH, a bolt on overdrive does not increase the transfer box speed, that is set by the final drive (the diff and transfer box ratios and tyre sizes), what the overdrive does do is to reduce both the engine and gearbox revs used to achieve that road speed of 100KPH. The advantage of an overdrive compared to increasing the t/f box ratio or fitting larger diameter tyres, is that you can disengage the overdrive from the drivers seat at any time, returning you to normal ratios.

Not something you can do with tyres or t/f ratio changes.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Thanks Pat, I have seriously looked at all of your stated options but the differences make each option stand alone on merit.

    255/85/16 4% increase, really negligible
Disco t/c 15% increase, a good compromise but taller 1st gear may be an issue
Roverdrive 28% increase. genuine overdrive + retains original gearing when not engaged.

    Hi folks.
I have been considering the roverdrive because i intend doing a lot of heavy towing, and have been told not to tow in 5th gear. I am thinking therefor that over drive 4th will protect the gear box when towing, plus give me the benifits of a 6th gear at other times.
My vehicle is a chiped td5 dual cab 130. Do you think I am making fair assumptions ??.

    Hi Dave,

The overdrive is a lot stronger than a fifth gear, and I believe you are right in your conclusions, but it would be worth sending an email query to Ray at Roverdrive just to be sure.

    email is roverdrives@yahoo.ca

Contacted Roverdrive and they are happy for 4th overdrive to be used as a pseudo 5th gear while towing. But do suggest fitting their finned tranfer box cover, and monitoring the transfer box oil temp.
They will not sell direct but suggest that ONE of thier dealers should be able to help me.

Well I have fitted the roverdrive to my defender and so far I am very pleased with the highway cruising speed/revs and it is very quiet.

I have recently exchanged emails with Ray Wood from Roverdrive and I must say he is excellent to deal with.

He has recommended a GL4 gear oil for the T/case because of the bronze parts in the overdrive.
    I am currently running a fully synthetic 75w90 GL5.
Does anyone know of a commonly available fully synthetic GL4 gear oil in 75w/90?

Fully synthetic 75w85 GL4 is easy to get so would it make much difference to run that in the LT230?
I don't know if I am splitting hairs here but it would be good to get it right.

    Cheers,
    Paul.
