						SupporterHi All,
i am usually in
the Disco section as I have a 98 300tdi auto Disco. I have cooked the motor and have a Nissan 2.7TD, 4 cylinder engine from a Nissan Terrano which I am wondering whether I can put in instead. I recall that there was one of these in a Defender 110? Is that the case in Oz? If so, did they hook onto my ZF auto box? What would I need to do a motor transplant into my Disco, but keeping the gearbox? Or could I use another gearbox???
Thanks, Erik

Hi Erik
The only Japanese engines ever fitted to a Land Rover in the factory were the 3.9 litre Isuzu 4BD1 and the 4BD1-T in the 6x6. These were Australia only specifications and fitted into Stage 1 Series 3 and pre-Defender 110 or 6X6.

.. and they were such a success that LR never had the nerve to do it again !
IIRC the Terrano engine has an electronic IP and unique injectors, and are VERY exxy to repair (3K+) , also there are a few other differences that cause parts supply issues as these engines were ONLY in Terrano in this country, no ther Nissan used them in that guise . I would think again.
Why not keep it Tdi? A far better engine than most mechanical IP Jap small capacity engines IMO.

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
Adventure as in you're going it alone, or you're looking for a new solution?
I'm currently putting a Nissan 2.7TD into my ..... Nissan
They've got a reputation as being pretty bulletproof, and pretty low tech so if you can get it to mate to your gearbox, the rest of the engine drop should be pretty straight forward. Time consuming, but straight forward.
Have you considered also using the nissan gearbox? If its the auto, its reasonably strong, the earlier manuals are pretty ordinary though.
Yes but Land Rover decisions are made by pommys who thought the deltec engine was a good idea.
There have been an awfull lot of people removing Rover engines from Defenders, Discos and rangie classics to fit 4BD1, but I've never heard of someone removing a 4BD1 to fit a Rover alternative.
Pretty much tells the whole story.

Yes, it was... better if you could regularly rotate the whole engine on its axis (120 degrees) so as to even out the piston wear...

Why seek an alternative engine? Because I am sick of cooking 300tdi's. Most engines allow you to smell hot coolant somewhere, note a rise in temp and then stop without doing any damage, but with the 300tdi by this time the whole head is cooked - I have now done it twice - yes - slow learner.
However,, the legal towing capacity of the Landrovers is what keeps me interested, as I have an occasional desire to tow a 3.5 t river boat around.
I hadn't considered the Nissan gearbox as my motor didn't come with one. Do you mean the Terrano auto, or will the 2.7 mate with other Nissans? What do you do about hooking it up to the drives then?
If I did proceed, how would I run the vacuum system that assists the brakes?
Appreciate the other thoughts though and may just wreck this one too and buy an old cruiser instead. The trouble is my $3k budget.
