Rear diff lock much advantage with traction control?

    Hi guys,
Looking ahead, I wonder about putting a rear diff lock in my new 110 as it has traction control.

Our old Disco 1 had a rear Detroit auto locker, but no traction control of course. The rear locker was very valuable in certain situations, particularly when towing our camper trailer. I particularly liked that it worked automatically, since I reckon it prevented us from being stuck in certain situations before I would have even thought to engage the rear locker.

Now the 2009 Defender we bought has traction control, it raises the obvious question of whether there is much advantage in adding a rear locker.
I was thinking of a Detroit Tru Trac (since its not locked unless a wheel spins). Wouldn't traction control stop the wheel spinning anyway, so is there much advantage in a Tru Trac plus traction control? If not a Tru Trac, would another type of locker be an advantage?

We don't do much rock climbing, so the usage would be touring, with or without the camper, and some sand dunes and mud.

On our Simpson trip, I noticed the guy with a D3 repeatedly having to turn off his traction control in the dunes.

I just have to decide if the extra expense is worth it for our usage. Not being experienced with traction control, I seek your advice. What do you think?

If you have TC your best value for money is to fit geared lsds like the trutrack or ashcroft equivalent. That setup will be 99% as good as lockers.

    THanks

I am thinking about this too.
so TC+lsd is like you have an automatic left foot braking (from TC), so to speak.
    it that correct?

Sounds good. Also a lot cheaper and more reliable than an air locker.

I would be tempted to hold off and really give the TC a good work out and see if it actually meets your needs - if it does then you have saved a few dollars. After testing, if you think you need more traction then go with the suggestions.

I do not know anything about the Defender TC system but certainly in the RRS there is not a lot to be gained with a diff lock over TC for most circumstances.

Yes, I haven't given it a good tryout yet, plus all my funds are currently committed to other accessories, so it will be a while before I decide. Hoping to give it a good run over Christmas.

    I find this intriguing.

My Td5 Defender has traction control and after doing a number of Simpson trips (Edjit Tours) I have "never" had a problem with TC in the sand. TC is unable to be disengaged in Defender anyway.

I don't do rocks much either and have come to the conclusion that I don't need a diff lock.

I have not tried this but...

When you switch the ignition on and you step on the brake pedal 10x within 10 seconds it disables the traction control.

It has been said before- Defenders are invariably more capable than their drivers. It is probably true of all Land Rovers.
