Puma ignition switch on its way out?

I've noticed but not paid any attention to mentions of Puma ignition switch failures/warranty replacements.

I think mine is now failing - on starting the key switch sometimes does not spring back to its resting position meaning the starter motor keeps going after the engine has started starts (which causes a racket).

Is this consistent with the experience of others?

Easy/cheap fix at dealers or PITA/expensive?

    Cheers, Sam

    Sam,

Before you get it replaced, try some bespoke lock lube on it.

Mine was sticking a bit when it just went out of warranty and I had a bit of a panic attack about cost. "Luckily" one of my work colleagues somehow got his key locked inside the car and he called a locksmith.

I loitered a bit asking some questions about why my lock might be sticking and I think out of frustration (to get rid of me I suppose) he gave me a little squeeze bottle with some sort of dust (graphite?) to "blow" into the lock. Two squirts and its never done it since.

Suppose you can buy it or drop past a locksmith and see if he'll help out?

    Cheers,

    Lou

Graphite powder, buy it at any hardware shop. Standard lube for any lock as it is dry so doesn't attract grit. A stated, a couple of puffs into the keyhole will lubricate the barrel, should solve the problem. Do the door locks whilst you're at it.

OK, i have some graphite powder so will do this.

My thinking was that graphite powder only lubricates the internal barrel part of the lock and that the spring mechanism would be 'external' to the keyhole.

Yep. There was a service note on the ignition sticking on and causing starter failures. Graphite in the barrel wont help as the issue is the switch itself and that sits on the end of the barrel.

Still worth a puff of graphite in the barrel I think, I've had the same trouble with other vehicles and lubricating the lock barrel has solved the problem. Obviously won't help if the switch itself is the culprit, but there's not much to lose by trying the simplest thing first.

Hmmm mine has a delay in starting sometimes. Was unsure if it was normal, but a quick search around the net confirmed it seems to be common problem. Incidently it is MY15 so LR still haven't addressed these issues 😠

In the sticky section of this forum, there is a link with service buletins, this is the one I was referring to.

    Title Mulitiple Starter Motor Failure
    Last Modified 21-JAN-2009 17:43
    Category Electrical
    Symptom 203000 Basic Electrical
    Content
    Issue:
Repeat failures on Defender starter motors.
    Cause:
The ignition switch can jam causing starter motor failure due to over running.
    Action:
    If the starter motor has failed check operation of ignition switch;
    a) Is the switch jammed through any of its positions?
    b) Does the switch fully return to position 2 once cranked and the inhibit operates, not allowing re-crank from position 2?
    c) Does the starter motor continue to engage once cranked and key released?
If the answer to any of the above is YES please change ignition barrel as well as starter motor as potentially the starter motor will fail again.
Vehicles post vin. 775971 have been modified and should not demonstate this concern.
