    high revs during gear changes

    Hello all


    I'm a new member and this is my first post so take it easy on me. I hope I'm not covering too much old ground.


    I have a 2 month old SWB defender and have noticed the engine revs stay high during gear changes. When the clutch is depressed the revs are held for 1-2 seconds then drop. It is noticeable when changing 3rd to 4th and particularly so changing 4th to 5th when you are still accelerating.


    I was wondering if others have noticed this, I'm hoping this sounds all normal or is there something that needs looking at. Can anyone help?

    I will be driving a new one by the end of the week (if it arrives at the dealer) I will let you know, but I am sure someone will chime in before then. I think it is probably normal, my inlaws Suzuki Vitara does the same I think it is the drive by wire thing, quite weired when you are used to a clutch cable.

    We got the software update to stop it happening, and it fixed it, but in hindsight probably should have just got use to it, it's a "feature" after all and slow deliberate shifts which suit the Deefer anyway seem to stop it.

    Glad to see others have this quirk as well. The first week or so it annoyed me a bit, but now I'm used to it. 3rd to 4th seems to be where it's most prevalent. But as I said I'm used to it now. Just like I'm used to reaching down into the foot well to pull on the hand brake. And pressing the indicator stalk to honk the horn, and putting the keys in the ignition on the wrong side of the steering wheel. I actually find the defender more comfortable and second nature than my partner's VW. It's funny how you adjust

    Thank guys, good to know this is normal, just another thing to get used to. It does catch you out sometimes and make some gear changes sound like my wife is driving which I don't like. I jumped in and bought the defender new because I have always wanted one and I didn't want one that someone else had crashed through the gearbox in!

    Chris, I hope all goes well for you. It took 6 months to get mine from deposit paid and signing contract. It sat a dealers for more than 3 weeks undergoing "compliance" and I think I only got it when I did because of several threatening emails I had to send. Anyway I'm sure it will go smoothly for you, fingers crossed.

    Thanks for reply and link to the previous thread. Can you tell me more about the software solution you mentioned, was it incredibly expensive? I find this "feature" a real pain. Any info you have would be a help.

    If you're talking about the PCM update, then that was for a certain VIN range. Local dealer wouldn't do it to mine (MY13) despite the obvious rev hang - even the mechanic noticed it.

    I'd love to be proved incorrect... so if anyone has different info please let me know.

    For what its worth.... I think the harshness of gear changing this causes is adding to the drive shaft flange problem :-/
