As Tombie pointed out, if you're a bit "mechanically unsympathetic" and really lug or labour a car in high gear at low rpm, it's not just the high egts that result  but the rest of the drivetrain that won't really thank you for it either.
At lower rpm there are fewer engine pulses, so each one is bigger, resulting in higher levels of torsional vibration and more potential for driveline issues.
Given some of the issues owners have had with backlash/replacement diffs/fretting of driveshaft and hub splines and so on, I don't see why you'd do it.
Coming from a Tdi disco, I'm as guilty as anyone of using the 6th gear in the Puma at lower rpm than I should, but there are 5 other gears to choose from....!
