    Puma Slick Shift

Update: the pivot pins were too short and somehow got through their quality checks. Kim from synchro gearboxes was great and has already got a replacement pivot assembly express shipped to me.

Mine rattles as I didn't put tape on as I couldn't initially put the stick cover back over. Also mine came with a lock nut over the grub screw that seemed to vibrate when accelerating through 2nd gear. Nipped that up and put tape on, greased and hammered the stick back on. Perfect, great short clicky shifts. Yeah reverse is a push.
Mind you doing my HR non-synchro course and test with a 13 speed box, now why the **** would anyone drive something like that?

Fitted the slick shift to Mrs Tombies 90 today.
What a great bit of kit.
Easy task, took under an hour from opening the door to Mrs Tombie taking it for a test drive...

    Smiles all round...

    Equipment used:
    Tub of Ptfe grease
Small ratchet with 4mm Allen drive and torx bit.
    Dead blow hammer.

Lifted matting and guided over stick,
Removed boot with stick attached from original lever and flicked out the way.
    Undid the factory bolts.
Swap fittings onto new shaft (pre-taped, assembled and loctite fitted).
    Apply lots of grease...
Refit to vehicle tapping into place to ensure secure fitting.
    Tighten new bolts...
Slide lever over new shifter, leather glove over gear knob and a couple of hits with dead blow to secure in place.
    Grease up some more.
Replace gater and refit floor mat...

    Easy Puma Slick Shift

Are they available from an Aus retailer or best order them from the UK?

If so where do you suggest?

A few members had problems with the slick shift. I think it was caused by the grub screw. One member welded the two shafts together. I believe the manufacturer brought out a longer grub screw and lock nut. Someone else posted recently about some shorter than normal pins causing the gear lever to rotate. I was ready to buy one but was put off by these reports. Is there anything obvious that would cause this.

Yep mine rotated and came off in my hand. Problem was I put it together to check fit and forgot to loktite. All good now. The two part now have a bit of gap so don't need the hammer to force together. Definitely a bit of tape, took the rattle out as I ran through 2nd gear.

I didn’t put tape on the 2 parts. Just a smear of silastic, fitted the grub screw with loctite and loctite to the locking nut also.

Still apply the tape to the shaft for the lever.

Bit of grease (use lots) and then placed a riggers glove over the gear knob and gave it a tap with a dead blow hammer to seat it.

    All easy to do.

I had the short pins. It didn’t stop me driving (3500km), but was a pain. Apparently they check them pretty thoroughly but mine “slipped through the net”. They had a new one too me in 4 days, and it didn’t take long to throw in.
Interestingly I had to remove the the grub screw and seperate the 2 parts. I had used retaining compound on the press fit, plus loctite the grub screw. I actually struggled to get them apart. If you are worried, you could always put a tack weld on it as others have done.
