    Just watched your vids...

Difficult to tell, but the 'smoke' does not look blueish, which is normally indicative of oil being burnt.

To me, this does not look like oil burning... more like condensation as the smoke is quite 'thin', whitish in colour and goes away seconds after start.

Will be interested in what your dealer says as well...

    Good luck :>)

So... they've ordered a set of injector seals and some kind of related kit and don't think it's valve stem seals now. Are "ruling this out first" - justinc you were likely on the money (and given their past performance it wouldn't surprise me if what you say is correct).
There always seems to be a lot of "thinking" done and "trying things" rather than diagnosis.

    Hi all,

An update - the injector seals have been fitted and tested. Apparently it is improved - "it's not smoking as much" which to me indicates it is not improved as it either smokes or doesn't - how much varies.

Apparently one of the injectors looked "quite carboned up" and the tech seems to think a good drive might help to clear it up so they will take it home overnight and let me know tomorrow...

That's normally all I use! Maybe it's because it has had MORE than 2 tanks of BP diesel!

Hi all - 1st post on this forum... I've been watching for a few years now as I learn the quirks before I purchase a defender.

Anyhow, leaking injector seats are a common problem on other makes. See the hilux and prado forums. In Toyota 1kd engine, which before the internet flames appear is a otherwise solid engine, leaking injector seats cause blow-by of combustion gases past the injector which solidifies oil during operation and allows oil to seep past the injector when the engine is off... hence the white smoke on start-up.

While I wouldn't be too worried about this, it does need some monitoring of the oil pickup and oil transfers to the turbo etc. Regular oil changes are very important.

A good diesel mechanic would be aware of this problem. I don't know the Puma 2.2 (yet) but I'm sure there are people out there with experience.

New seals/o-rings didn't fix it. One week later they had managed to send the injectors off for testing - diagnosis: there is nothing wrong with them.
Phone call today - "so when the tech's went to put the injectors back yesterday they noticed the bores that they sit in were gunky so they've cleaned them up and even used some emery paper, reinstalled the injectors and it all seems sweet."

To me putting new o-rings in would have automatically triggered a "check for cleanliness before reinstall" action...

Will pick up today and keep an eye on it over the next few weeks.

I know not the same motor, but when i did injector washers in my TD5, noticed similar build up on 2 of the injector ports, so also gave them a very light sand with wet and dry. New washer in and had issues with smoking etc. Pulled them out again and they were bubbled and pitted. Ordered a new set as I thought I had installed them wrong and bugger me there was around 2mm difference in diameter, so I as I had kept the old ones pulled them out and the old ones and second new set were same size, the first new set were smaller, yet same LR number on packaging. Have not had any issues since.

Is this something to be considered as a proactive measure/maintenance? how much the o-rings cost? how easy is it to do etc?
