    Puma 2.2 smoking on start-up

    Hi all,

My Defender has just come out of warranty (approx 1 month) and lo-and-behold it has started smoking on start-up. It has become more regular, and more smoke is coming out. It's a white to grey smoke and have managed to catch it on video:

Need to take it in to get it "diagnosed" and of course they need to see it in action.

Happens after it has been sitting for a bit. Doesn't seem like condensation.

Anybody else have this or have any ideas that I can suggest are checked out?

    Thanks,

    Dave

    Recently changed fuel source?
    Are you down on power?

No to both. Same bowser, same station.

Only does it on start-up at the moment - doesn't do it under load.

Recently had the cam-cover (not sure if it actually is that) seal replaced which looks like an injectors out job at a glance and their is what looks like either oil or diesel on top of the cover. Given it's previously been returned to me with hydraulic fluid spread through the engine bay because "quality workmanship", a fuel pump earth not properly attached, and a number of other questionable things, I initially thought it might've been a non-cleanup job, but now I'm starting to wonder whether or not it's been appropriately put back together.

I have a puma 2.4 that has just started doing the exact same thing. Ill let you know what my mechanic says.

Mine also has started idling really rough at the lights, but only sometimes.

sorry it took me so long to reply, I've been away for the school holidays.

I heard back from the mechanic yesterday and they seem to think its my injectors.

Did you have any luck with yours?

I found this post 2.4 Puma - Possible Injector Problem

which seems to suggest it could be the VCV, does anyone know if it's worth me changing this before the expense of changing the injectors?

is there a way I can tell its 100% an injector problem?

    Thanks guys

    Dan

I'm concerned that new injector sealing washers weren't fitted. Considering that they are $60+ each (😠&#128544 i would hazard a guess that they weren't. The smoking could be a compression issue at idle. A tiny leak won't necessarily cause any noticeable power loss. Vcv will also cause rough idle and poor starting... so not convinced that is the cause without proper investigation.

My MY15 110 has been doing this the last few months intermittently. In fact it does it more when in 1st gear pulling away from the lights.

I reported it to the dealer when it went in for some warranty issues but they said they couldn't replicate it.

Might try and film it like you so I can take it back with proof.

    smoke

mine is doing this, or i should say did this. i havent seen her for 6 weeks!! LRA currently have her in Malvern and at this stage are refusing to fix it under warranty. I had been complaining about while it was under warranty and even when i took it in to get the pump recall done. no one seemed too worried about it (they all do that-surprise surprise) but it didnt go away but got more intermittent and severe -some starts nothing some starts a smoke screen. i took it back, now out of warranty, and insisted that it needed looking at. does yours have a high crankcase pressure by any chance, do you have a friends you can compare it to? LRA told me i have a cracked piston ring, at 60000 kays. At the moment they are testing the oil and injectors that was over a week ago.
im now thinking of camping out down there until i get a resolution! my suggestion would be to park up at the dealer and not to leave until you get it fixed.

No idea what the crank case pressure is.
It's currently in at LR to have valve stem seals checked.
I sent it in a couple of weeks ago with a few videos just in case but surprisingly it did it for them.
They reckon I'll have it back by the end of the week... but I won't hold my breath. I'm sure the Golf they have leant me will make a great river camping base next weekend 😉

They also said that it had used about half a litre of oil.
