    Ashcroft Imports

Not a very interesting thread. Went looking for some of you who have imported items from Ashcroft Transmissions...

Just wondering what the protocol is for paying import duties and GST? I've ordered a rear locker, a centre ATB diff, and the MT82 shaft adaptor. About $2530...

Will Customs just contact me? Is there anything special I need to do....

    Thanks!

I just got in 2 ATB center diffs about a month ago. They came by DHL and DHL did all the paper work for about $20, I think it was. The duty and government charges were just about the same amount as the GST. DHL contacted me with an invoice and once I paid they delivered quickly.

The DHL 'tax' is a scam , don't pay it. Ive never paid it & goods are received .

I received Ring & pinion & diff rebuild kit, and some axles from Ashcrofts a few weeks ago . Nil tax .

Have another order in progress now.

*As from JULY 2018 GST is ment to be charged by the supplier.
*I haven't done any orders to Ashcroft since then, but will need to shortly.
*Other businesses in the U.K I deal with have been changing me the GST amount.
*Before then, on big orders when there was a import duty to be applied, again it was the supplier that gave me the option at the time of purchase to pay the import duty, if done like that items turn up hassle free.

*I made a mistake a few years back and did a big order with a U.S based business, the items came via AustPost, they sent me a notice from Border Force bluh bluh (here to save us from imported Land Rover parts), then had to fill out a Form 123ABC bluh bluh, paid invoice, 3 months later AustPost delivered..... the import duty ended up costing about 30% and it would have been cheaper to order each part individually.

*So I guess it depends on whom you are dealing with, Ashcroft in the past have always been excellent, so I cant see that situation changing.
    Regards
    Daz

It might be a scam but it's the Aussie Government not DHL. A previous order this year before the rule change had not additional charges.

At the moment Ashcroft are not applying GST for sub $1K orders. I haven't had any orders over $1K... so no idea about those.

    Cheers.

This is a little old, but it's a salutary lesson in what happens when you don't do your homework. There are many suggestions as well. Importing stuff...Grrr...

Its all a bit complicated. As i understand it:
    • if the order is over $1000 then GST is collected on arrival from you by the shipping company as was always the case.
    • if the order is under $1000 then the supplier is supposed to register with the Australian govt, collect the GST from you and remit it to the Aust Govt.
    • if the supplier does less than $75,000 business per year to Australia then they don't have to register.
    • Rules are slightly different if the supplier is selling to a business here which is registered for GST and a consumer (private individual) who isn't.

in reality I can't see many smaller overseas business's registering, unless they use an on-line commerce platform that does it for them. For example LR Direct use Global_E which now collects GST. Ditto Ebay. So depending on the supplier you may sail under the radar.

    Cheers

    Steve
