    Rebuild a V8 = $3,000.
    $60,000 - $3,000 = $57,000
    Petrol $57,000@$1.50 = 38,000litres
    38,000l @ 22l per 100km = 172,727.27km

Yeah mate, that makes good sense
Bad maths there, Ron. The fuel consumption figure should be based on the difference in fuel economy.

Let's assume the Td5 gives an average of 11litres/100km and the V8 22litres.100km - that's a difference of 11 litres/100km. So you can double the distance you've given, i.e., 38,000 litre @11 litres/100km = 354,454km. (And we haven't taken into account the cost of diesel which is much higher.)

We won't mention the higher servicing costs of the diesel. OH, damn, I did.

    38,000 @ 10l per 100km = 380,000 kms

SO.........in reality knowing that you really dont have to rebuild a diesel unless something major and out of the ordinary happens.

172,727.27km in a diesel $25909.10 so technically a saving of $31909.90 over the same distance.......thats enough for a bit over 5 rebuilds by your money and still have change to go for a bit more of a drive.

So how do ya like them apples Ron

    It's the 2 Ronnies......

By the way, I buy my fuel in bulk, last lot was $1.54 ltr so it's not that much more expensive if you know where to shop....

Where do you all get the price on rebuilding a TD5 or is it just the old mate you know who did this once and it cost him so much routine?

Resale value in a Land Rover + the ability to totally rebuild a TD5,

    What are you people on?

I was just going off what Ron said it cost........to be honest, I wouldnt know, Ive got a 300TDI.

My only point was that someone would be nuts to pull out a TD5 to drop in a Rover V8........and Ron just prooved my point

I guess I should explain the figures
mcrover said "I would rather rebuild my TD5 10 times before I would fit a rover V8 ." Highly likely you would have to, as well", meaning, the TD5 breaks down so often, it would take 10 rebuilds to a V8's ONE rebuild

Therefore the savings by having a V8 rebuilt ones to the cost of 10 diesel rebuilds, = etc, etc

Ron, Given that scenario, the TD5 will cost half as much to run, which is true.

Then we take into account servicing cost which is a lot more than a V8 and preferably more often.

Now add to that the cost of replacing a motor, which is close to three times the cost of a V8 and under most circumstances they will both do similar mileages before being rebuilt.

Overall, the V8 will be cheaper to run.
Then comes the crunch, put the V8 on LPG!

    25 litres @ 65c = $16.25 for a 100km
    11 litres @ $1.60 = $17.60 for a 100km.

Why do people drive dirty smelly diesels

Thanks to all those who provided some light here. I'm now siding with the 'fix the td5' set.
So......... could I please now get some advice on the best shop to take my defender to, to have her inspected properly, and fixed.
I am in W.A, and seeing as this is not really a thing to be taken lightly, I'm willing to take her to the big smoke to get looked after.

Any excellent sandgroper mechanics out there??

    Cheers, Craig.
