    Transplant?.........foolish??

On a previous thread I tried to decipher a particular ailment, and potentially it could cost me around the 4K mark.

I have a friend, quite the LR nut, is getting a replacement V8 for his '86 County. The cost will be 7.5K drive out with a rear diff lock thrown in, or 5K for just the motor. Theres cam options and also options of the carbed 3.5 and injected 3.9, all the same money.

Would this be a good option for my '99 td5 defender with 178000km's, or will it make it potentially unsaleable if I ever decided to quit it.
I love the vehicle, in fact apart from the engine woes, couldn't really see myself ever getting anything else.

I'm aware the V8 LR's love a drink, but the 130 has such volume of cargo area, the gas option becomes viable in a big way, plus it's nearly a free fit (but for how much longer?)

    Any advice eagerly absorbed.

    Cheers, Craig.

I wouldnt but then Im the resident manual diesel nutter.

depending on how your going to go about getting the engineers reporting done and the gearbox mating done on a pure LPG conversion it shouldnt be too bad.

I wouldn't do that to a TD5, just because they are high value and well sought after, and I think it would kill the resale (I wouldn't buy a V8 ex-TD5 unless it was for V8 County money!).

I am still toying with doing it to my 110 though, but that's worth far less than any TD5.

I would rather rebuild my TD5 10 times before I would go backward and fit a rover V8 plus engineering would be a hassle as well as restricking your range to the availablility of LPG as you wouldnt ever get it complianced on petrol unless you went for a 99 or later engine due to emisions.

Im not a fan of the TD5 but what could happen to one that you would consider doing such a thing.

If you wanted to go the conversion path I would slot in a 350 chev, a chev diesel or something out of a truck (like a 4bd1-t or that Toyota 13BT).

    Just a footnote.
The LPG rebate was unaltered in the federal budget & will continue as originally planned.
I think the tax starts getting put on in 2010 & increases after that.

    I'm biased, I love the V8
Cheap to fix, expensive to run but so much fun
The cost between diesel/V8 repairs, buys a hell of a lot of fuel..

This has been done to death Ron.......you know that has been prooven to be incorrect due to the fact that you have to repair Petrol engines more often.

Highly likely you would have to, as well

    Lets see, Rebuild a 5 cyl diesel = $6,000 x 10 = $60,000
    Rebuild a V8 = $3,000.
    $60,000 - $3,000 = $57,000
    Petrol $57,000@$1.50 = 38,000litres
    38,000l @ 22l per 100km = 172,727.27km

Yeah mate, that makes good sense
