Hi mate, would you have a link to a suitable unit by any chance?

Its been 10 years since I looked at this - at the time I got my current heater matrix that also includes an A/c matrix from these guys

Anyone got a photo of a stock 101 showing the location please? [biggrin]

The bracket bolts/screws to the back of the front bumper on the passenger side.

To be specific - there are two tabs spot welded to the back of the front bumper and the bottle bracket bolts to those. The top tab and and where the bottle bracket bolts to it is visible in my pic if you blow it up.

Thanks heaps - that actually makes it really easy - given I have a compressor mounted already for endless air - I'll ditch that old unit and fit a new compressor there, all the other stuff is pretty easy from there. I'll measure up and pull the entire current heater assembly and fit one of the underdash heat/cool units and plumb that in. [smilebigeye]

My basic four outlet unit - I have since put adjustable eyeball vents into the holes. The white fittings are standard pvc hardware store fittings which take the warm air to the windscreen defrost vents via standard airvent pipe. No flaps - just close (or partially close) the eyeball vents to direct air up to the windscreen - system does need the inbuilt fan to be running. Yoiu can use the original fan and flap in the tunnel to direct fresh air into the cabin an into this units fan or close the original fan/flap to get recirc.

That’s the unit that caught my eye as being something that would work well and not look out of place. Isn’t as an expensive exercise as I thought either. Just need the time to sort it. 👍😉

Finally got around to fitting some vents up front - GF said it would be better with AC - who am I to argue? 😁

Also went over everything from front to back, checked everything I’d worked on, greased the prop shafts, checked and topped up all fluids. Remounted the coolant recovery bottle. Went to take it for a test drive and found my clutch pedal had gone completely now - had been a bit of an issue is the last few days but I thought it was just air in the system even though I couldn’t get any out when bleeding it but seems to be more than that. Today’s job was going to be pulling the slave and master cylinders to see what’s going on but moving some timber this morning I’ve pulled a muscle in my back so I’m layed up on the couch and can’t move so that pretty much puts any chance of getting Chucky to Corowa next weekend to bed. 😥

So close to pulling that little miracle off but last time I did this to my back I was stuffed for days so I think crawling around under Chucky isn’t going to happen. Was also booked in for a new exhaust system on Wednesday but that too looks out if I can’t move. I think I could drive it down the street without the clutch no dramas, just my back may stop me from getting in and out...

Will see what transpires over the coming days, but looks like I’ll be in the Hilux and a tent next weekend.

Well the clutch is now working again - and the thanks for this hire to Grey Ghost. Not only did he offer to come over today to swing the spanners and crawl around under Chucky and other stuff I couldn’t do because of my sore back, he also bought good second hand master and slave cylinders with him too from when his was converted to auto. We pulled these apart, cleaned them and gave them a once over with some wet and dry and they came up great. The slave was the actual issue with mine but we changed them both. Clutch works like a charm now.

Again, thanks heaps GG - really appreciated the assistance today. [emoji106]

So Chucky went down for a new exhaust this arvo, the guy doing it is well known for classic car systems - he had an E type Jag and an HK Monaro on his hoists the other day.

Anyway, dropped it off at 2.30 this arvo so he could have it for first thing tomorrow but he calls me at 8pm saying he’d stayed back and finished it because he loved working on it and thinks Chucky is a beast. 👍

Says it sounds great now - can’t wait to pick him up, as he’s sounded like **** for a year now with about 1000 holes riddled throughout the system.

Will post pics tomorrow arvo when I get him home again. 👍😁

While he is driveable, I just haven’t been able to put the KM on him to trust a big run like this at the moment. Haven’t had him above 60 yet so too many variables and probable tweaks needed so I’m currently packing the tent in the Hilux and will head up like that. Not the end of the world, I’ll still get to camp around my mates, have a beer and a laugh, so all good. 👍

When you’ve just modified the steering and brakes like I have, regardless of the Engineer saying it’s passed, there is some trepidation driving it at ever increasing speeds. It hasn’t given me any signs of problems but I’m being very cautious. The steering is sooooo different now I’m having to re learn how to drive it.

It’ll get there, so will I. 👍

Just thought I’d share a few pics of what will be the shiniest and newest part of Chucky once installed. Just had my spare 101 LT95 I’ve had stashed for years rebuilt ready to go in. Was going to be part of the big trip prep, but that’s off now so it’s just part of ‘make Chucky not a pig to drive anymore’ mods. Fits well with the power steering and disc brakes. 3rd and 4th gear have been difficult for a while now with 4th being unusable until the gearbox has warmed right up for years, so a box with all new synchros in it should be a joy. Also had a RTB conversion fitted in the transfer case just because, why not make it as good as it can be. This has changed the ration slightly from 1.174 to 1.123 but that will barely be noticeable. I’ll not be fitted the overdrive to this box, I found I hardly use it anyway, so that will be one less oil leak to worry about. Will be fitting the winch drive to it before installing it so I can finally get the Noken winch working in it. 👍

Wont be installing it until the current isolations have finished as I’ll be using a fellow forum members hoist to swap it, so that’s out for the time being.

When I had to take out my gearbox 10 years ago, because the winch connecting shaft cannot be removed with everything in place the decision was - remove the winch or remove the transfer case drive.

The winch looked too difficult - so I took the winch drive off the bottom of the tfr case - not having done it before I went carefully but a whole bunch of ball bearings fell out - I managed to round them all up before they went down the drain on the side of the driveway. However it is relatively simple to remove to drive and replace it - all gears and no chains.

So have a close look on whether the drive shaft will go in with the PTO is all place - if the same as mine it will not, so put the box in without the PTO and bolt it up later. Oh - I dropped my box down rather than going up but I guess that is personal choice and where you have the room.

But as I said I have not did this for 10 years so the memory is a bit hazy.

Hello Gavin,

That gearbox certainly sparkles! Is it coated with something to stop it anodising? If so, what is the coating?

It took a lot of effort with scrappers, wire brushes, scribe points and copious amounts of degreaser to find my 2A ambulance's gearbox under all its caked on mud and grease. However, once it was all cleaned and hosed off and dried, the top surface started to anodise.

If I return it to its military fettle the whole engine and gearbox was painted in camouflage paint. I am not sure whether this was standard practice? Maybe the apprentices needed a job to keep them busy for a while?

I was going to spray the cleaned surface with a lanolin product. However, I am concerned about residual layers that may interfere with future re-painting. Unless the wax and grease spray will take care of any lanolin film?

How is the Jaguar going by the way?

Kind regards
Lionel

Homestar
30th March 2020, 05:34 PM
Hi mate, I think the coating is just a rattle can of silver paint over the cleaned housing components. Maybe the guy that rebuilt it can elaborate further as I paid a professional to do this who knows these boxes inside out. I have rebuilt gearboxs myself, but this box is up a level or two from my comfort zone.

Jag is going great - it now lives in the garage as it should and gets an outing here and there. Runs beautifully since I tuned it and apart from the window switches, has been kind to me recently. 👍😊

31st March 2020, 07:32 PM
Lionel, you can buy "aluminium" spray paint in a rattle can. VHT make it.

Gav, have you thought about fitting the larger perentie style hand brake assay to the gearbox? I don't know if you have the room for it under there. Would be a better hand brake, I would think, than the tiny rangy one (Same as I've got).
Cheers Rod

Hi mate, I haven’t thought about upgrading the handbrake no. Biggest reason I suppose is the current one in Chucky works perfectly well so never thought about it. Remembering a 101 is a tonne lighter than a rangie so that probably helps a bit. 😊

Ok, with the garage cleaned up and usable as a workshop again, it was time to get stuck into the rear wheel carrier. As I have 2 spares now - 315/75/16’s, there’s no way they can go in the back or even one fit where the spare used to be, so a rear wheel carrier is the go. Rather than just do something that only serves one purpose I thought I’d make it a dual purpose design. To that end, I have designed and started to construct a fold down carrier that will also serve as a small deck/step up into the back. There are pros and cons of this, biggest of which are easy deployment and the extra room out the back required, but the first one will be sorted with a small electric winch and the second I thought hard about but can’t seem to think of a situation this will cause too many issues.

Given that this carrier needs to support 2 spares at around 40kg each, I’ve overkilled the design. The unit mounts where the bumperettes go - these bolt through the entire rear cross member with crunch tubes in between. The rear fairlead attachment also uses this, so the are is very strong and well up to the task.

So, design calls for some tubes with bearings in them — of course the wrong chuck is always in the lathe and this is the only time I find my lathe a little large - there is a small crane planned to do this mounted in the corner in the future so it will be much easier, for both chuck changes and loading larger stock.

Turned out the centres of some tube to fit the bearings. Even doing small stuff like this in a big lathe is easy as, so no regrets in getting this beastie - it covers off everything I need all in one machine. Maybe a bench lathe for stuff smaller than say 5mm, but that’s not going to be common work for me.

Fully welded these into the main uprights, then pressed the bearings in.

Next came the supports. Again, overkilled as I slotted the plate then welded the 10x50 supports from both sides.

Bit more done today, although I only spent a few hours on it. Each wheel will be lowered or raised onto the carrier by a hand winch (when the carrier is lowered by a larger winch) - these smaller winches are now mounted so you can see how it’s going to work. They need a few small mods but are geared low enough to handle the weight of the wheels. Got the first wheel mount mostly made and tacked into position. Should get it close to being able to mount it on Chucky tomorrow if I get a decent run at it tomorrow, so should know if it will all work as planned. Won’t be 100% finished as the main winch location on Chucky requires quite a complex bracket to mount it and also the cable run needs to be sorted - a bit of faffing around, but all going to plan, will be a simple flick of a switch to lower and raise the main platform when access to the back is required or if I do indeed need to change a tyre.

Not quite, but nothing stopping me I suppose... 😇

It’s the internal access to the house from the garage. 👍

So back at it again this morning. Got the other wheel support made and welded on, then mounted the whole lot on the back of Chucky - needed my engine crane to do this, it’s bloody heavy - which is actually part of the design - I was never worried about what this would end up weighing as I need the weight in the back to make it ride better - it’s actually quite smooth to drive with a tonne in the back but that’s only ever happened once, so for the camping fitout I’m actually looking to find weight as I am in the enviable position of having plenty up my sleeve, then some.

Put the tyres on the ground and lowered the carrier over it - please note the winch IS NOT going to live there, this is just for testing the concept - the winch will be an electric unit mounted in the rear tool box just behind the back wheel.

Winched up the wheels, then the whole carrier.

The hand winch and 6mm cable on it did the job very easily so nothing is going to be over stressed doing this. Still have pulleys and bracing to mount for the lifting and support system but that’s another day. Also have the securing mech to make too, but that’s going to fit in easily where I thought it would.

Will be a few days before I get back to it now I think as I have some gardening to do this weekend before getting back to work on Monday.

If weight is no problem why not use a cable with counterweights instead of a winch? [biggrin]

The rated shackle looks the part though, gives an indication of how heavy that mofo is! [biggrin]

Well it’s the first time in weeks that I’ve been able to get back to Chucky. I can finally say that the brake upgrade is complete now. Had troubles bleeding the new callipers but sitting around a campfire at Wombat 350RRC enlightened me to a little trick - remove the pads, put a suitably sized spacer in where the pads go so the pistons can be pumped out to there fullest extent without popping out, then crack the bleed nipple and push each one right back in - heaps of air came out - about 3 times for each piston until it came clear, then I had a pedal straight away.

Will still be some weeks before I can test them as all the rims and tyres are coming off now and the rims are getting widened then new tyres are being fitted, so by the time all that gets done, it will be a few weeks I think.

Will post pics once the wheels are back, looking forward to this bit. 👍

Dunno what made me think of this but another way of bleeding those callipers would be to unbolt them from the bracket, put a spacer between the pads and position them so the nipples are at the top to let the air out, then bleed as normal, then re-install.

I'm wanting to put Def 46mm callipers on my POS with a D1 pedal box I have with the double vac thing. All Dougal's part numbers disappeared with outerlimits.com.

The front axle is County with a Maxi and has the raiko bushes.

The callipers you used look like what I might need.

cheers, DL

Batto says g'day too.

Like a lot of people, due to Covid, trip plans and work on vehicles slowed to basically a stop for the last 12 plus months. The big 6 week trip I had planned went up in smoke and so did all my leave keeping the lights on when our hours were pegged back, but I count myself lucky during this time as we kept our jobs unlike so many.

Well thought it was time to start back on Chucky so jumped in and checked a few things over before trying to start him for the first time in over 12 months. Found the throttle was stuck so off with the engine cover to sort that - a spray of WD-40 and working things back and forth freed it up easily but in doing so and checking all the linkages, etc one of the little ball joints broke off the linkage that operates the second carby from the first - bugger...

Needed to move Chucky anyway so thought I’d give it a go on one carb. So, after sitting for a year, the battery not on charge and only one carby working, what do you think happened...?

Yeo, fired into life after about 3 seconds cranking and settled down into a nice idle after 10 or 15 seconds and the choke could be pushed right in. 👍👍👍. Gotta love that. 😊👍😊

So went to order a new linkage - A quick check on line showed they were readily available for $60 to $70. Thought that’s a little steep given what it is so had a look for an alternative. Found one pretty quick on fleabay for half the price stocked locally and ordered it. 5 days later (Posted from 65KM away) [bighmmm] it turned up.

Well it’s an order of magnitude better and stronger than the original or the other ones I was looking at and has rose joints, not crappy plastic ball joint ends. Nice and shiny as well although no one will ever get to see it. 😁

Pic below may look like the new one is longer, but it’s just the angle the pic was taken from - it’s adjustable and fitted perfectly.
