Is this standard on the surveillance models?

No, it is seen on some of the upgraded "Mission kit" ones; not all. It seems like the crews had the choice of what to take - a third spare wheel or more liquid. Come auction time, they're sold with whatever was fitted to the vehicle last.

Installed new wipac led indicators and park lights. Wasn't as easy as I thought it would be, but still wasn't hard.

For future reference, I would have sourced a Amp connector from a late model Defender and plugged them in, rather then cutting the plugs off and crimping them.

Part numbers:
S6060LED
S6061LED

Headlights are up next and then combo tail lights.

Did the battery 'off/on' switch. I got a auto elec to crimp/heatshrink 2 lugs and make me up a 250mm positive battery lead, $15, to suit the new battery post clamp.
https://www.blackwoods.com.au/part/03738868/terminal-battery-matson-ma142hdnbl1-neg

The cable was from some of the FFR 24v cabling - the east west cable joining the battery boxes left and right side. One end of that red cable was worn/chaffed thru and would've been L & D (blown a fuse doing it too I reckon).

UHF finished install and checked. 10km away loud and clear.

btw, I fit the UHF, the mic and the cig/usb outlet in a genuine LR velour padded $500 centre console. Schmick.
No I didn't. $500 is a lot of diesel.
I used an upside down 10 litre plastic tub.

I also looked for a better place to put the 1.5litre fire extinguisher bracket.
Not easy. In the end I just fit the bottle alone into an old arty round packing tube.

When I mounted the relays I thought it was a clever place (after a few minutes of head scratching) but once I started trying to mount them I realised it was a pain in the ass. Ended up losing a litre or two of coolant. I guess a coolant flush is on the cards now haha.

Just installed a new set of head lights, Chinese knock off similar to jw speaker lights, quality looks great, have plugged them up and the look as bright as the lights on our audi q5 during the day. They fit in the old headlight housing with some modifications (the housing that is) Have to wait till dark to see how well they perform, but enormous improvement on the stock lights.

Still need to do a the relay upgrade, but the less still use less power than the stock.

Will report back with more info and images after dark.

You guys are falling behind!

I few presents arrived in the post today, a FM aerial plus mount, two mounts for spotlights, and some horns that actually get some attention haha.

The spotlight mounts are actually 38mm aerial mounts, but I couldn't find any purpose built mounts for spotlights to attach to the 35mm bar on the Perentie. These should do the trick though.

I haven't wired up the horns yet, hopefully they are loud. I can see part of the problem with the original horn is there is only one of them.

Today:
1/ The front tyres were scrubbing out on the inside on each side, so I checked the alignment. There was 32.5mm difference between the front and rear of the wheels that's massive when they should only be slightly toe out. :o

Apparently when they fitted the new front end last February they merely took the front assembly out of the box and fitted it, never got around to doing an alignment. Even the paint was intact.

2/ Removed the front outer guard with the crushed corner and then re-fitted the panel from 49-353, so now I have an ex 8-12 Medium Regiment RAA FFR with the Red-eye packing bilby and Christmas tree of 16 AD Regiment RAA. It seems a shame to paint over original markings, so I'll leave it for a while.

3/ Swapped over the FFR instrument panel for the one with the ammeter with the centre dot intact.

4/ Swapped out the front RHS headlamp and bucket for one from a civvy 110 and connected it with a new, dedicated earth. Ran out of time for the LHS headlamp.

5/ Fixed the wiring for the reduced lighting,

Having hardly driven my Perentie since November, today for the second time I refitted the new water pump, to find it leaking again. I think the new, genuine pump may be the problem...don't want to have to pull it all down again. But my County thinks otherwise, demanding a clutch bleed and full service whilst the Perentie takes daily driving duties again. Gah.

Wheel balance and alignment today.

The replacement wheels for the ones that scrubbed out with the poor alignment (15.25mm toe out) developed a vibration at anything over 85kph and I couldn't imagine another trip to Corowa at less than 90kph (one year it was an average speed (excluding stops) of 65kph. I now know why Master Chief doesn't travel in convoy with his dad ;) ).

Still haven't decided which radio to put on the empty radio tray. (106 or F1)

Does anyone know the pin outs for the MT-1029 and into the Perentie distribution box? The 3 pin plug on the end of the lead has the wrong sized shell for the DB, so I have to change it.

Last service was 6/12/2013 and it just says topped up fluids, not changed, so god knows how old it is. as i said, it looked new. vehicle has only done 2400km since then.

Completed the transfer box and PTO oil change.

(note to self for next time; Make sure your funnel is not forming a seal when filling the tansfer box or you might accidently put an extra litre in which will pour out all over you when you take funnel out!)

Now off to do the diffs.

Chris078
14th March 2015, 08:22 PM
Gave up on the diffs. couldn't get either plug out. seems like they have been put in there with some kind of locktite/glue on the thread.
leaving that one for the mechanic.

Final note of interest, I only got 5.5 litres of oil out of the engine. I checked the dipstick before and it was inbetween the 2 marks. I broke my filter wrench trying to get the filter off so there would have been a bit left in there. Still, I put 7 litres in and it's now 1 cm above the high mark.

Is this an indication of a fair amount of sludge in there?

Phil B
15th March 2015, 06:26 AM

I would drive it and change the gb oil again in 1000km see how it looks
If it's not doing anything strange why fix it? Recon that box will be about $3500
7l refill oil is correct. Filter takes about another 500ml
The actual amount of oil seems to vary engine to engine
Just go by the dipstick not the volume is the advise I had

IRT Grease and oils- I only recommend what the designers recommend. I know that some people have had good results with technical oils in the gearbox but -caveat emptor.

What grease to use on the grease nipples. The manual says XG291, but I can find a civilian equivalent.
XG 291 is Rocol Aerospec 300. Go here, download the data sheet and find a suitable substitute. https://www.rocol.com/datasheets

Diff oil, I know the front Diff is 85w90 EP Gear oil.
I've seen some mention of the rear Salisbury diff needing 80/140 EP gear oil? (even though the book says 85/90)
85/ 90 front and rear. Reasoning as per gearbox oil.

If you could help me with those things I would be so grateful!

IRT the gearbox wear. I highly recommend chatting with Brian 'Bearman' here. He is the LT95 &A Guru. The good/ sad truth is that even if you have to rebuild the gearbox, you have payed less than average price for your truck. At least you will KNOW that your box is good for another 200K+.

I hope that this helps.

Thanks BFD! your're a champion.:D

I managed to get by with taking off the existing gaskets, driving down to Repco and finding replacements that way.

Have you noticed that the replacement fuel filter from Isuzu seems a little smaller than the one the army had on it? It fits and doesn't leak, and the part number on the box matches, but it is smaller. and it leaves a small gap between the top of the filter and the bottom of the bracket.

I'll look into that grease. i picked up some Isuzu MP2 grease that seemed likely. only got to grease the front prop shaft before I got the damned nipple stuck on the PTO u-joint. cannot for the life of me get that off, so I've left it for the mechanic to remove and I'll talk to him about what to use.

I looked at that site, not sure how it's going to help me find a substitute?
unless there is somewhere I am not looking.

took it for a drive after changing all the oils, filters etc. seems fine.
bit of a 'snick' when you change into 2nd from first, but it all works and no grinding/crunching etc.

off to the mechanic tomorrow for a more thorough lookover, we'll see what he has to say about it.

G'Day Chris. Did you download the specs sheet?
If you are after a straight substitute you can compare them with another manufacturers.
I consider it a bit of overkill in normal application.
Another high quality grease will do. It is not as critical as the gearbox oil.
Glad to help.

all good. none of the drain/filler plug gaskets were original. you'd want to hope not after 30 years!

Gday, Got the front done today as well as the steering damper.
There isnt a lot of room between damper and winch PTO.
So with the Terrafirma i chose the medium load rear springs (+300kg). The heavy load (+500kg) seemed a bit much. For the front i got the heavy load (+100kg) having the 4BD1 and a winch.
All was a 2" lift and i used the Terrafirma Big Bore Expedition Shocks @ +2". I ended up with 25mm lift in the rear and 15mm lift in the front.
I have 255/85R16 tyres and they still scrub out at not quite maximum flex.
I will give her a good run over easter and see how she goes.

Started work on the false floor. Had some left over shallow unistrut from work. The frame is all laid out, just need to weld it up and then sort out the marine ply.

I have used the four bolt holes for the dicky seats to hold the frame in place.

A draw will be added and the enevitable wasted compartment on the right will hold an air tank and compressor.

The front bar is flipped over so the ply will end 20mm short. This will enable me to remove the middle seat and a drop in a ply section for sleeping arrangements.

Put a dual battery system in. ***** of a job & I've done heaps of them. Needed a bit if adjustment to the seat base to sit them in properly. Used a Piranha battery tray (BTDEF), Piranha DBE 180 system & Baintech panel for the outputs.
The tray allowed me to fit and secure the two batteries well. I fitted the controller in the seat box as well. It's a good area, I don't need to see it, or the lights on it, and it helps keep a bit of originality to the vehicle. Likewise, I fitted the distribution panel behind the passenger seat. It's out of the road, slightly protected & easy access, whether I run the big fridge in the back, or small one in the front. I put a section of 1.5mm rubber over the top of the lot, under the floor cover, just to save any chance of shorting out. Seat belts tomorrow, then a maiden trip with all my troops!

On the subject of diffs, maybe I'm missing something here, but today I went to fit my new ARB diff cover to the rear diff on my Perentie 110.
It is a standard Salisbury rear end, however there is a brake line support bracket which is normally bolted to the axle housing through the diff cover.
With the new ARB cover, I see no way of doing this - is there a fix?
The other discovery was that the threads on the axle housing are different to the bolts supplied.
The bolts are easily sorted, but I'm not sure about the brake line bracket - any suggestions from anyone?
I'm also following this up with ARB.

BadCo.
5th April 2015, 01:56 PM
The ARB diff cover is made for the Dana 60, which is imperial, hence the bolts not working (obviously the Salisbury 8HA is a metric Dana 60).

As for the bracket, I see the left hole goes all the way though. Can you get a longer bolt and a nut and put the bracket on the back?

By the way, I like that you painted it white!

Also, are you going to grind the bottom of the diff down now that you have the ARB cover?

Gday Samuel.
Any details on the diff swap?

hey Dave, what would you like to know? landrover spares in mackay did the swap, I picked up the arb lockers for $900 each in December. landrover spares supplied the new crown wheel and pinion sets. same as the defender sets. needed either the lockers or defender centres as the 6x6 centres would not fit the new gears. I wanted 3.9 ratio and contacted a few overseas suppliers, no luck. at least if I ever need another set the 3.54's are easier to come by. I have the compressor behind the drivers seat and switches up high on the dash.
everyone said the gearing would be no good around town and off road but its similar to my 300tdi 130 so im happy with it. a little more grunt it will be great and hopefully quite good on fuel.
has cost to much money...
im not very tech savy, can someone tell me how to post pics so I can through a few up.

Haven't fitted the cover yet to see what does/doesn't fit, or needs to be ground down.
Which bit are you saying can be ground down?
The idea of bolting through the housing occurred to me not long after the post was put up, so I think that will be what i'll do.
I'm just a little peeved that I wasn't able to get the job finished today.

5th April 2015, 02:42 PM
I think what people do, because the ARB diff cover has its own drain plug, they weld up the existing drain and grind down 20-25mm off the bottom of the diff housing to gain more diff clearance.

If you remove your blackout switch you need to join wires 1 and 2 (brown) for your headlight function. you also need to join 5 and 6 (Green/purple) together for your brake lights to work.

Fuel cap
Brand : Hilton Manufacturing (http://www.hiltonmanufacturing.com.au/) go to Products ->Fuel Tank Catalogue (it's on p28)
Model : FCL 301VL
Cost: $70
Weight: about the same as the original cap (a lot), also has a chain securing it to the pipe.

hmmm, just realized there is a vented and non-vented fuel cap. Anyone know what the standard cap is? I got a vented one, hope that is correct ;)

Unfortunately had to do the clutch slave cylinder. (better than losing the clutch altogether)

Went to do the master cylinder at the same time but the one we got was different to the one that was fitted.

OK maybe the landcruisers were helping but it only worked when the perentie pulled from the front:)

on the weekend I finally finished my headlight fault finding /wiring upgrade/driving light & light bar instal/ internal lights project.

many delays & interruptions, lots of head scratching, quite a bit of swearing but lots learned along the way. very satisfying now i can drive at night time!

thanks to Tim at traxide for answering some questions that were probably quite silly, and thanks to Badco for sharing some tips after doing his own traxide upgrade.

I was just thinking yesterday that a tray light where you have yours might come in handy one day. It looks good. I see they made you put reflectors on, so what are you using for tail lights?

Phil B

Apparently the LED tail lights I installed do not have built in reflectors so the shop I bought them from advised me to fit reflectors as well.
Went straight through like that.

Ok, so not today, but in the last month or so:

-swapped out the rear coils for some softer ones from the rear of a Nissan Patrol, they fit straight in and there are lots of options available. I was lucky - I had a set gathering dust that we'd swapped out of a mates Patrol due it being saggy in the rear end. They are perfect for the Perentie, lifted it slightly and the ride and articulation is much better due to the lower rate (thinner wire diameter). The standard rear coils are over sprung unless heavily loaded.

-fitted a viscous fan, also from a Patrol
-fitted some HD rear drive flanges

-best of all, finished the TD04 HL-19T turbo installation on the weekend. Well not quite finished, as I couldn't wait to drive it but finished enough for 'test driving' purposes, with some detail work still required. Best mod by far, it has transformed the vehicle.
I used to think it was geared a bit too tall, but not any more...I can now accelerate from 100 km/h up a hill that I previously couldn't get up at 100 with foot to the floor. Instant boost response from down low and plenty of top end up to the governor. It feels more driveable than my previous 110 with the stroked V8, however the lack of rev range means gear changes come up quickly when accelerating hard.

As an initial tune, I am using the 1 bar actuator spring, with the rod as short as it goes. Fuel screw is out about 2.5 turns, with very little smoke (less than when n/a).
Note: the egt probe cable is sheathed in stainless braid and there are multiple exposed live terminals on the back of the blackout switch. Have a guess why my egt gauge is no longer working properly....

I'd say it helps with noise, up to a point, there are lots of other noise sources which come in to play at various speeds. It wont make the vehicle quiet, but it helps. Hard to comment on the power, logic says it has to make a difference when unlocked. Potentially some fuel economy benefits as well, I suppose.
I had one from a Patrol laying around but not sure if I'd spend the money otherwise.

No, it is a modified FFR design with canvas behind the cab including a clear window.

What did I do on my Perentie today???? Well I went out to Grays in Welshpool this morning and picked her up. I am now the proud owner of RFSV ARN 51-745. I put about 70 kms on the clock taking her home. I will have a crack at licensing her tomorrow. All going well I hope to have some new shiny WA plates on her tomorrow afternoon. Maybe I am being too optimistic but you never know your luck. Hopefully not too many issues to rectify for licensing.

Anyway I had a look through all the lockers and found a full set of tools as well as a heap of recovery gear, original jack, air line for the compressor, tyre levers and a heap more bits and pieces including a tire repair kit and about 5 new inner tubes. I will lay it all out and get a couple of photos on the weekend all going well.

One thing that puzzles me though is what I found when I had a good look at the ignition key when I got home. The key for her is attached to a camouflage key wallet with the letters ARN 51-745 written in permanent marker as well as a plastic key label attached with the letters ARN 51-745 and the description Irwin Barracks Karrakatta. It got me thinking though. Why would an RFSV be assigned to a metropolitan location like Irwin Barracks in Karrakatta?

She is in excellent condition and it looks like very little off road work has been done in her but I was under the impression that she was from the Pilbara Regiment until I saw that key label today. The label looks like it is quite old and a bit worn so I don't think it was something that was put together while the vehicle was waiting to be sold by Grays and stored at Karrakatta until the auction took place but I could be wrong. Any knowledge or feedback that could shine some light on the history of ARN 51-745 would be very welcome.

I will post some images of ARN 51-745 hopefully tomorrow.

Just screen shot the defect list on my inspection notice. Not too bad I guess after reading a few post's from the South Australian's on the forum. How does this compare to other peoples experiences? Just wondering how many other WA Perentie owners had to install an immobiliser and get weigh bridge slips to get their Perentie licensed in the West? Rear seat removal seems pretty fair as the compliance plate only lists licensed to carry 2 occupants and I was also told by the inspector that you can not license a vehicle with rear facing seats. Seems odd though because every limousine I have sat it has rear facing seats. I didn't argue with him, said I will back in the next week and left with a forced smile on my face.

Maybe I went to the wrong inspection centre??? Love to hear from anyone else who has gone through or going through the process.

Seems like a reasonable list, with the exception of the immobiliser. Book an inspection somewhere else and just before you go, get under the vehicle with a rag and wipe everything dry. Try to make it believable i.e. not completely filthy except for clean patches where the oil was. That way you'll be able to take care of the leaks in your own time with the vehicle registered.

With regards to the weighbridge ticket, it looks like they just need a number to write down for the tare weight. You might get away with printing this out and giving it to them (yes, it's for an FFR but they probably won't twig to that).

Replaced odometer and odometer cable as both were buggered. Used cable for V8 (PRC6023) and used odometer from a 300TDi. New odo reading 200k as opposed to old one reading 170k so should be OK with the law. On test drive found I was getting a consistent over-read of 6km/h plus a little needle vibration. Will reroute the cable to minimise kinks and see if that helps the vibration. Cable $50 incl postage, used odo $70.

Top tip: I cut the odo end off the old cable and inserted it into a cordless drill and brought it with me to the wreckers so I could test the used odo. Be sure to have the drill set to reverse.

I had to get a weighbridge ticket for my 6x6. Manufacturers data was not sufficient.
I have seen several rear facing "dickie" seats in the back. If you want to keep that one you may need to get it engineered.
The immobiliser is something peculiar to WA I think.

I think you've done well.

I never said required by law and reasonable are the same thing. I get it's the law, I just don't see why it's reasonable to require it.

And yes, weighbridge tickets are required for vehicles over 4.5t GVM like a 6x6, but shouldn't be required for the RFSV unless that too is WA specific.

mudmouse
24th June 2015, 08:46 PM
I don't get the 'seats' bit. The problem should be when people are carried in the vehicle, more than certified to do so. If you take the seats out or leave them in, you can still carry more bums than it's allowed to... It's up to the driver to decide isn't it?

Anyway, that's the law so good luck with it.

Matt.

In fact, thinking about it, I'm sure one is required as a mate of mine had to fit one to his 84 4runner when he moved over there.

Cheers Robbo. Great to meet you the other night too. I will print it out but I am going to a weighbridge tomorrow arvo to make sure it ticks the box as well. I have fitted the immobiliser and sorted out the other issues I think. Power steering unit does have a small leak but I am going to wash it off and go straight to the inspection and see how I fare. I have it booked in for a return visit on Monday. I will sort the leak out later once it is licensed. Does anyone know if the 4 bolt power steering unit can replace the 3 bolt unit? I have been told by a parts supplier in WA that it can but thought I would run it past the wisdom of the AULRO experts first before I invest in a new 4 bolt unit. does $880 sound like a fair price for the 4 bolt unit? Tom's Towbars, Pappas Drive Wangarra. They are open between 8am-4.30pm and it costs $25 to weigh your vehicle. I rang them this afternoon and they said you dont have to book just turn up. The other option is Tamala Park Tip. There is a weighbridge there and I have heard that you can do it there but someone else has told me that it depends who is on the gate. Maybe try Tamala Park first on the way down from Two Rocks and if you cant do it there then go on to Toms Towbars. Hope that helps. Regards Warrick.

Does not apply to vehicles over 25 years old - which would include many Perenties, according to the link. And vehicles the weight exemption probably exempts 6x6s.

Good to hear you got yours on the road so easily Paul. I think I probably was unlucky to go to my local garage at Yanchep and score a bit of a list of things to sort but I went back yesterday after completing the list and it passed easily. Very excited to be driving it now as a registered vehicle in WA. I riveted the plates on last night and haven't wiped the smile off my face yet. I have had a set of Wolf rims sitting in the shed for some time with the idea that when I get a Perentie I will fit them on, shod with some 255/85/16 BF Goodrich's. Too right!

It's sooo easy to fit the tyres with the lettering inside, Big Friendly Giant aren't paying me to buy and wear their tyres, why should I give them free advertising.

Some regular application of black boot polish or tyre black will disguise it. I know that I had the white out, back when I was a kid, but the 1970's is a distant memory and I insist on them lettering in these days.

BTW: Can you come over so I can admire them? (I need to replace some BFG's on my Defender! You'll hardly notice the wear on them when you leave ;) )

Probably closer for you BadCo as I am around 3500 kms away from the East Coast haha. I did about 100kms last night on the open road and then about 10kms on a track near to where I live and I was very impressed with the new tyres. All going well I will be heading North next week and will probably do about 1500-2000 kms depending on the weather and also the reliability of ARN 51-745. Hopefully be able to post some images of the trip when I get back. I am going to change all the oils and filters this weekend so I am starting with a clean slate. Probably one of the few mod's I will do but I think a good one for the type of driving I do. Today I finally got around to fitting the bonnet cable I've had here for a while. Easy job that went smoothly for once.:p

Not so smoothly is the rear wiring.
It's a mess of hacked in extra wires, old wires no longer used and several places where the wrapped had worn through were it rubbed on the chassis.
Also found the rear crossmember with the tailights in it is completely full of mud.
Which may have corroded a few things leading to a earth problem back there.
Have to take it down to my mechanic to get the pintle off (need a rattle gun for the nuts, after 2 weeks of constant spraying they won't budge) then I can disconnect the lights, hose it out and re-wire it all properly.
My neck already hurts thinking about lying under there for a few days straight! :o

What is the recommended engine oil for the Isuzu engine? Regards Warrick.

By all accounts, the 4BD1 is not fussy; any decent 15w40 Diesel oil will do the job. Being an old tech diesel - ie dirty but uncomplicated - I would think changing it regularly is much more important than using a particular brand. Castrol RX Super is popular - and is generally what I use as it's readily available at a reasonable price and has a good reputation. A quick search will give you plenty more options if you like. Some people report smoother, quieter running or less blowby with one oil over another but I can't say I've really noticed much difference when I've tried Mobil Delvac / Shell Rimula on my '85 550K klm old N/A. Blowby is good and it's always pretty noisy and harsh :p

Chris,
I agree with the previous 2.
I use Castrol RX Super in engine, gearbox and transfer case as recommended by most people on here. All good so far. SuperCheap has 20l for $120 at the moment-good value. As BadCo said you will need 20l for 2 services. If you have just aquired the beast you would be wise to change all the fluids straight away-you have no idea how long it has been standing outside. My gearbox oil was grey before I changed it.

Hi all, does anyone know how to adjust the top half of perentie door so it closes closer to the rubber, there are two bolts underneath- that Ive tried, doesnt seem to help, perhaps it needs a wegde rubber of some kind to push it inn a bit, i think it might have a slight bend- not sure thou....looks ok

also does anyone know what the digial counter on the dash is for-how do you use it?

thanks

Robbo,

The door tops are not adjustable but I have found that replacing the perished and hard door rubbers plus replacing the seal in between the door top and bottom helps. A bit of old fashioned brute force bending them back into position helped to.
The do da on the dash is a trip meter particular to the RFSV. The normal Perenties don't have them. It should be connected to a hall sensor in the front brake pad. Just a more accurate form of the trip meter on the speedo.
No idea how the wiring works, sorry.

Landybitz

Cant say I have seen any that shut perfect, new seals will help close the gaps, as will extra sealing strips on the inside of the door tops. Plus little bending and you can adjust the top mount plate in and out also.

the roof mounting rubbers for the perentie rfsv from landrover part number RO-MYH3383 MOUNTING-RUBBER-they are are $2.13 each and perentie tool box KEY-BUDGET LOCK RO-HYG3022 are $11.90 each.

The 110 Perentie - NORFORCE, paint colours are Camouflage Green is 342-1166, light tan Camouflage Brown (Auscam Tan) is 342-5265,
but dont know the red colour, its not Camouflage Pilbara Brown - 342-5239...as they have tried these codes to mix at protec...anyone know what the red colour is? looks like rust kill red undercoat.

also got a quote for the seepdo cable for perentie-PRC6043 for lower cable. PRC6037 for upper cable, they came in at $255.00 for lower cable. $320.00 for upper cable...wow expensive

That sounds like genuine prices.

It'll be cheaper to get a hall effect sensor (https://www.lrdirect.com/YBE100530-Transducer-Speed/'sfi=YBE100530&keep_https=yes) and new speedo (http://www.egauges.com/200-KpH-Speedo-4-p/437-156.htm) and a bit of 3 core cable.

I'm half way there, then you can adjust your speedo to suit your tire size.

I got that price when I asked for a speedo cable for my Perentie (which is a GS). The parts manager was sure that I needed this 2 piece thing, me sure that it was the same as my Defender's one.

"Oh, ok, the one piece ones are $32".

So is it worth $540 for you to have a working trip meter (which, if it works off the speedo cable is just as reliable as the odometer, no?).

The red colour is Pilbara Red which Protec sadly does not make any more.
You may be able to special order it, but I don't think you'll be able to get it in an aerosol.

Those be crazy prices for cables. for that much you can (almost) get an entirely new VDO unit.

Had a good couple of days getting to know ARN51-745. I met up with AULRO member TM_Co and he very kindly showed me how to service and check all the fundamental components. All oils and filters changed and I feel a lot more knowledgeable thanks to TM_Co's help. Also met up with another forum member, Dodge, who came past late in the day to check out TM_Co's Perentie's. All in all a great day! Hopefully we can all get out for a run in the near future together. Also fitted a sound system to ARN51-745. No holes and no bolts or screws. I was able to use the power socket located on the roll bar behind the passenger seat to power up a blue tooth UBoom speaker. Simply cabled tied the speaker to the rifle holding clips on the roll bar. Very secure and the steel plate on the roll bar behind the speaker directs the sounds forward. It is amazing how good it sounds for such a simple little speaker. All music and radio comes via my iPad, iPhone or digital radio that is blue toothed to the speaker. I fitted a dual USB power socket in place of the cigarette lighter socket and it powers both the speaker and iPhone/iPad or radio. Works a treat and sounds really good. Also works as a hands free device for my iPhone when I am talking while driving, not that I will use this feature but it was handy yesterday when I was using Google Maps and getting directions to find TM_Co's house. I could easily hear the Google directions over the Isuzu BD4 symphony. Regards Warrick.

Went out to Woodhill Forest on Saturday with a few other trucks. Had a good time and shamed a few haters.

Had a few incidents though...

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2015/07/715.jpg

Managed to drown Hank in a big bog, water was nearly going in my gumboots when I was sitting at the wheel. Hank inhaled A LOT of water. Dragged it back to a mates place nearby and stripped out the air cleaner and hoses and spent a few hours drying everything. A mechanic mate did what ever you do with the glow plugs.

Put it all back together, fired it up and drove home. How awesome are these engines?

Also, is there anything else I need to do with the engine after having it inhale water? Air cleaner elements are on order, and a snorkel will be too. Are those air cleaner drums pretty well sealed? I'll do something about the duck bill too when I get the snorkel.

Chris078
12th July 2015, 04:22 PM
Got lucky there Badco! a little more water and that would have been expensive.

The air cleaner drums are not water tight, apparently someone on the forums here (can't find the post now) makes some sort of kit that makes the lid seal on the drum.

I think in this scenario a mechanic will pull the glow plugs and crank the engine to get the water out of the cylinders.

Might be worth changing the engine oil. good thing 15w40 is cheap and you can do it yourself pretty easily (if I can do it, anyone can!)

I've always wondered about snorkels that look like this. (http://s.productreview.com.au/products/images/72256_safari_snorkel.jpg)
How do they not force water down the intake when driving into rain?

<edit> Also, as someone who just spend 2 hours underneath my Perentie with a pressure hose, do give your truck a good clean out before the mud turns to stone.
Whoever had this car before me drowned it, and never cleaned it, and the mud is resisting all attempts at cleaning it out.

Yeah that's what my mechanic mate did, he took the glow plugs and cranked it tog et the water out and also bled the fuel.

That pic makes things clearer. Always wondered how they didn't just ram water into the intake.

Glad you mentioned fuel. You should probably drain your tank.
The breather hose is huge (like 1" diameter) and quite low. depending on how deep you got, you may have some water in there.

Definitely check the fuel sedimenter (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/coil-sprung-military-land-rovers/181899-what-did-you-do-your-perentie-today-30.html) behind the main tank.

If you got water in the air box, then the breather hoses likely got dunked as well.

You may as well bite the bullet and do a full fluid change.

Luckily that's fairly easy and cheap.

You need 20L of 15w40 (Castrol RX super or the like)
and 4L 80w/90 diff oil. - 5l if you do the steering box as well.

That will do your engine/gearbox/transfer case and PTO if you have one as well as the front and rear diffs.

might be worth taking off the breather hoses and seeing you can blow air through them.

Check your brake and clutch fluid too, water may get in there if they aren't sealing 100%

Pulled the engine out of the 6X6 today to replace the clutch and rear main seal. Found that the clutch was totally stuffed as I expected from oil from the leaking rear main and even the pressure plate was not salvageable because of scouring on the surface. Lucky I have a Heavy duty clutch kit on the way. While I am at it I decided to pull the oil pump cover off and replace the oil control ring and spigot shaft seal - just as well I did as I discovered my gearbox has the old bakelite type oil pump gears in it - I thought it would have had the later steel oil pump seeing as it it a late model (1998) . A couple of other things that needed attention was the throwout bearing which had separated where the sleeve and the housing join, the spigot shaft housing extension was floating around loose and the clutch fork pivot post was loose in the housing. So to sort it all out, new extreme HD clutch kit, new throwout bearing, new type steel oil pump kit, new seal and oil control ring, modified pivot post with locknut and new slave and master cylinder plus a new spigot bush. The old one was easily removed by filling the spigot bush holder with grease and inserting a dummy spigot shaft and then hitting it with a hammer - a few hits and the bush was out. Photos to follow tomorrow hopefully.

Hi Phil, No the oil pump upgrade won't be on the mod plate but I would have thought that anything rebuilt or delivered after about '96 would have had the upgraded oil pump. No way of telling unless you take the box or engine out and check the oil pump. If you get to this stage make sure you do the clutch fork pivot post upgrade - I will post up some pics of it.
