Went for a drive today down the southern exp way to TRS. Bought some s/h shockers for the rear. Bought 2 hub seals as well. Just about had to sell snoopy to pay for the seals. $42.00 for 2 seals? Bloody rediculous. $6.50 at repco. Must be trying to suppliment the xmas do i think.
Anyway the bush pig can maintain 100 kmh quite ok. No black or blue smoke. Just a bit of steering shimmy but its just wheel balance. So wheels to get balanced tomorfow as well.
Tried to undo the drivers door hinge bolts today. No probs. Came undone easy as with the impact driver. I was told "nah mate you'll have to drill em out and buy new hinges and bolt kits from us."
They came out of the s3 easy as as well when i took those doors off. Some ppl just dont wanna even try. Im gonna put the s3 hinges on for the moment till i can get the right ones that take the mirrors. Gonna buy new mirrors and heads from ebay. Then get flat mirror glass cut and glued on. Cant handle convex mirrors and froper flat glass heads are over a hundred bucks each
So tomorrow will be putting the shocks on.
I changed the oil and filter today. I also took the original army fitted fuel filter off and fitted a new one. Some ppl are so slack. The PO hasnt changed the fuel filter since hes had it. Over 3 years. So i thought id check the fuel sedimentor thingy at the bottom of the fuel tank. As soon as i touched the plastic drain plug it started ****ing out diesel. So i had to clamp the feed hose off and i removed the whole thing. The sedimentor was chock full of crap. It was almost 2 inches deep. Cleaned it all up. Cleaned up the tread for the plug and fitted a bolt and washer to it. I had no new "o" rings so i reused the old ones with some rubber grease to stop them getting pinched. Then bled the new fuel filter. Started up straight away. Gee that motor runs sweet as.
Well thats all on the perentie today. Geez i love driving that thing

Finally got off my backside and went and (on Mick Marsh's recommendation elsewhere) bought a Century 86Z battery to replace the incredibly dead one it came with.
Started her up, went for a long enough drive to get everything warmed up and the fan kicking in, and had a good crawl around under and over the engine bay. Aside from the steering box leak that I knew about anyway (hopefully just a seal that needs replacing - see my other thread), everything seems ok and there were no worrying noises noted.
Can't recall when she last moved, but I remember getting back from the UK in early July and thinking "I really must get a new battery", so it'll be at least six months. And annoyingly the main reason I haven't driven her sooner (my dodgy back) is still an issue. Ah well.
Next job, thorough clean, put the canvas back on, and get ready to reluctantly sell her :(

I've been nstalling a manually switched reversing camera and a reversing/camping light both off No.2 battery in the RFSV.
It all seems to work OK, the major problem has been finding where & how to duct the wiring and the best spot to locate the screen.
There were more options in the FFR I had fitted out previously.
Pics will follow when complete.

Ok today I fitted the new clutch hose and overhauled the slave cyl. Bugger to fit with the pto driveshafts in the way. Bigger bugger to bleed coz of said shafts. All good clutch great.
Next I fitted second hand EDIC cable, thanks rar110. Now turns on and off with the key. Great.
Refitted intake duct correctly.
Tomorrow's job might be fitting a 12 nato plug back in and maybe making a 12 to 7 pin large round plug adaptor cable.
Will have to get my no.5 trailer to test the lights then.

Today i fitted the 12 pin nato plug to the perentie. I also fitted the key barrels to both doors. Wonder why the army cut the locks up so the barrels stick out? Anyway i fitted the barrels and fitted some heater hose over the ends of the barrels to protect them and make them more asthetically pleasing to look at. They function well.
Im pleased with myself. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/02/729.jpghttps://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/02/730.jpghttps://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/02/731.jpg

Referring back to post #1510 above ...
Well here we go, my promised pictures and a summary writeup of “what I did to my Perentie”, installing a Repco $70 reversing camera and a 12v camping/reversing light.
Unfortunately, medical incidents have delayed the project beyond where it was when I last posted in this thread (#1510) but now I’m well again and it is completed
This is not a treatise on modern electronics, I just used old time procedures with fuses, wire, connectors and crimper using cable thick enough to carry the current for the long runs. I tried to do as little alteration to the this very original RFSV so that some future custodian wouldn’t be cursing me for mucking up the OME wiring.
Camera Requirements
The camera instructions come with the logical instruction that it should be wired from the reverse lights so that it comes on when the vehicle is in reverse gear. But, as you probably realise, the reversing lights in a Perentie only work if the engine is running, so for a Perentie, I think that it is preferable to have it manually switched so that the rear view can be checked anytime, even prior to starting.
The camera draws such a minimal current that it has been wired from the main battery for convenience.
Rear Worklight Requirements
It has been wired so that it can be used at anytime for camp setup , cooking etc. Also can be used for reversing down a dark driveway or in the bush for better illumination for reversing.
Since the RFSV has a dual battery system it is obviously preferable to power it from the aux (non-starting) battery if it is going to be left on for some time for example, while a meal is cooked.
Generally
As it is a soft top, the camera and light are mounted on a post on the driver side rear corner. The post is readily detachable so that it can be removed to avoid snagging on overhanging vegetation in scrub country.
Throughout I have avoided drilling holes wherever possible so cables are tied in conduit and split corrugated tube and the mains are ducted it in the gal side capping where possible. Garden watering tube (16mm od) from Bunnings makes good lightweight conduit that can be readily cable tied to existing rollover and canvas support frames.
The dash of an RFSV is quite cluttered anyhow with the high fusebox and precision odometer already, so small plastic jiffy boxes from Jaycar make excellent switch mounts and containers in which excess cable can be secured.
The cheap reversing camera kits seem to carry rather an excess of cable length some of which can be removed – but take care not to sever the small 4 core camera to monitor cable – I imagine it could be difficult to rejoin correctly/satisfactorily. One of the wireless kits would overcome a lot of this.
Hopefully this can give someone an idea that I'm sure they'll be able to improve on :)
Note: the attached pic with the severed cables shows what can safely be removed from the cheap camera kit, the black box on top of my centre console is one of the jiffy boxes I have used :)

Today i dug out the can of protec camoflage green paint. It was camoflaged so was hard to find....not really.
I stucka tent peg in my drill to stir it up coz its been sitting a while and was very lumpy.
I painted the 4 replacement door hinges. Then i went mad on the pink spots that were on the green paint on the bushpig. I also painted the shiny galve d shackles ive got hanging front and rear.
Then i painted the pintle towball type hitch.
Its all green now.
I rang protec and asked about the other 2 paint colours. They have the green and black but no tan. Bugger. They no longer manufacture the paint in Adelaide. It now comes from Melbourne. Only in 4lt tins too. They have the green and black also in spray cans but again no tan. Grrr.
No pics today. Sorry.
Oh and i made a 12 pin plug to 7 pin large socket adaptor as well. Must test it tomorrow with the tester thingy.

Sorry guys, I keep forgetting to update...
Past week: Refurbish bonnet tools and get new tires.
136902
Tools: The axe and mattock has been re-hafted using bunnings hardwood hafts, and the mattock head has been repainted using primer then this stuff: Montana BLACK 400ml | BLACK 50ml - 600ml | SPRAY PAINT | SPRAY CANS | MONTANA CANS – highest quality urban art supplies (https://www.montana-cans.com/en/spray-cans/spray-paint/black-50ml-600ml/montana-black-400ml) in their colour "murdock" which is pretty close to the perentie OD. Tool mounts back on bonnet using Zinc-coated steel M6 bolts (the originals where I still had them, new ones when not) and nylock nuts.
136901
Tires: These were getting pretty manky and old, I'd had a couple of punctures on asphalt(!) so was keen to get a new set. Based on this thread: Biggest and best tires for Perentie 6" rims (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/coil-sprung-military-land-rovers/202553-biggest-best-tires-perentie-6-rims.html) - Thanks @Badco! I looked around for a good 235-85R16 tire. After a bit of searching around and reading reviews, I went with BFGoodrich All Terrain KO2 tires: Bfgoodrich ALL-TERRAIN T/A KO2 235/85R16 120S Tyres - Buy Online Price $279 (https://www.tyresales.com.au/buy/tyre/bfgoodrich/all-terrain_t-a_ko2/235-85r16/142950?q=4) I have saved the two best ones and put them on the two spare rims I have. One went below in the usual spot on the frame, while the other I have rachet-strapped down to the load bolts at the front end of the tray between my tool box and the ROPS - There isn't any movement, so I expect it to hold just fine. They are much quieter than the XZL Michelins, but I don't expect them to last as long based on reviews :( Would have got a new set of Michelins but couldn't find them for less than stupid money...
136903136904
The jerry in there is empty, just using the back for storage ATM.
Next set of jobs:
- Repaint the new bolts on the bonnet.
- Figure out a method of securing bonnet tools so no bugger nicks them.
- Clean all the dust out of the dashboard (again).
- Corner some mechanical type to help me through re-oiling the front swivel pin housings and help me check the old girl over for any other mechanical bits and pieces to keep an eye on. I'm happy to pay in beer/time/heavy lifting, if you are keen and are in Adelaide.

So today i tested my 12 pin to 7 pin plug adaptor. Works great.
I fitted a UHF aerial bracket to the roo bar today then found somewhere to route the wire. What a nightmare. Had to pull most of the dash out to get it neat. Now ive put it all back together i forgot to run 2 wires for the driving lights switch. Bugger. Im also thinking about a dual battery setup. But will run those wires along the chassis where the 24 volt cables were. Will prob run 2 N70 size deep cycle batteries in the left battery tray box. Offset the weight a bit. Then run an anderson plug into the rear and plug a couple power sockets into it. Not sure if my projecta isolater will allow me to run the solar panels on the roof or if i just set them up beside the bushpig during the day. Thinking thinking...
Gotta get a price on the batteries first.
Put a couple kings 9" led spotties on top of the roo bar. I havent fitted the lights yet. They are a bit high i think. My light bar is too big to mount on the bar so it'll have to wait. Gotta fit the awning to the left side yet and thinking about fitting the rear one as well. All this just for Melrose... cool.

Ive fitted 2 d70z deep cycle batteries 105 amp. Lead acid coz im not sure if the alternator will charge AGM. Got to wire em up next. Ive had to modify the battery brackets to fit the batteties coz they arent as long as AGM. They are 13" long and d70z is 12". All good. Im happy. Solar panels on roof next i hope. No pics but i've wired up my dual battery setup. Three batteries. One n87lz starter battery, 2 x d70z deep cycle batteries in series. Haven't tested it yet coz i've still gotta wire up the switch for the isolater bypass. I've also wired the driving lights up but not fitted as i'd like to keep them also. I also fitted my old kings 2.5 x 2.5 awning. I've also got the rear awning ready to fit but not yet as i want to keep it too. Going to test the crank battery tomorrow as i've found out it's 4.5 yrs old. My luck it will fail at melrose if i don't check it. Next few days i've gotta fit an anderson plug to the "house" batteries and a few power sockets, test mount the 160 watt solar panels and see if they work. Gonna be a busy roof rack on the bushpig.

Today i changed the oils in gbox n transfer case. Bit shiny. Checked the rezt of the oil levels. All good. Tightened the lower banjo bolt on the injector pump. Was leaking. Greased the tailshafts. Noticed a lot of play in the rear tailshaft. Looked inside the fill plug. Slop seems to be in the drive flanges. Removed the plastic caps. Shock. The flanges were stuffed. Pulled one off. The splines were as sharp as a razor blade. Caught them just in time. Fitted these this afternoon. $110 each from TRS. Wish i had more money, id have bought a fuel tank too. I also finished wiring the dual battery isolater cut out and a dual volt gauge. Oh and a driving light switch too. Isolater is switched. So is volt meter earth so it can be turned off. Not our Perentie, but we came across this last Thursday afternoon on the Sturt Highway, just out of Balranald.
It occurred a couple of hour previous, Perentie FFR versus two Semi's. Not sure of the actual circumstances,
but one prime mover was sitting on the verge with a badly damaged front right side. Another, a B-Double, was
also parked up with it's front right corner all peeled back. Possibly this damage was sustained from running
into the rear left corner of the Perentie.
Any one from AULRO own or know of this Perentie? It had NSW rego.
The Perentie has taken a big hit and sustained a lot of damage, however the cab looked pretty well intact!
Cheers, Mick.

Depending on factors like time of day, position of sun etc etc it would not surprise me if at least one of the semi drivers just did not see the camo LR - it gets very flat out there and can cause long shadows.
Obviously I'm thankful to read that they all walked away :)

Hi. New to Perenties and have read all posts on this forum re seats etc. Very informative. My Perentie 4X4 FFR is second car. Occasionally need to pick up kids for school sport etc. It is not main use. Want to provision for 5 seats and have spoken to Hornsby engineer who usually fits seats. I want safety and space so I am thinking of middle seat in front and two rear facing seats and wondering if anyone has experience and photos and whether possible to buy second had seats from other cars and if so which cars. Main use for car is to drive to ferry to get to work, occasionally drive to work and camping with plans for Northern Aus trip. Inspired by photos I have seen from other posters, and of course Les Hiddins. Cheers JM

Well today i picked up a new 90 fuel tank to replace the perentie's rusted tank. Genuine perentie tank $1895. Genuine 90 steel fuel tank $320. Differences?? Ok, the 90 tank has a relief in it to allow clearance for the front of the rear lower arm to bolt onto the chassis. A loss of about 5 litres of fuel. The outlets are the same except the breather hose is about 10mm lower than the perentie tank. Inconsequential. Bolts up exactly the same. Fuel pick up and sender units fit the same. The blanking plate will fit the same too. Pro's? Brand new tank. Clean and rust free. Cheaper than an original tank. Fits the same. Con's? Loss of about 5litres of fuel capacity. Big deal. Fuel gauge tells u when fuel is getting low.
Can carry 2 jerrys on the back if ur worried.
Far as i can work out its a win win situation. Im gonna be happy anyway.

Cheers Rodhttps://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/05/353.jpgWell i just found another "con". The 90 fuel tank looks so close to the perentie fuel tank in size BUT, the depth is not the same. The perentie tank is 14 1/4" deep the new tank is 12 1/2" deep. I thought it was too good to be true. But like i said, ive got jerry holders and ill prob lose 12litres capacity not 5l. The sender unit is adjustable at the float length wise and i can always bend the stop tabs up or down. I will have to cut the pickup by 1 1/2" thats no biggie. Prob ive got is the PO cut the return pipe of the sender unit so i have to find another one. Hopefully not too hard. Its gotta be a diesel sender coz its got the low fuel warning on it. The "Fun" never ends.
Cheers Rod
Quick edit. The tank lower half is the same depth, about 6", the top half is shorter by about 1 14". So with the cutout in the bottom as previously mentioned and the loss of the height in the top half i prob lose 8 litres capacity. The other thing ill have to work out is the sender. If i get one from a 90 ill have no probs but if i have to repair the original one im gonna have to adjust the length of the pipe for the low fuel contact thingy. I suppose its only a return line from injectors so wont have much pressure. Hmm thinking aloud.

Today whilst driving my beloved perentie i noticed the alternator charging the batteries at 15.2 volts. Too much i thought. So had a look under the bonnet....nothing visible. So went to local auto sparky got him to look. This is what happened when he touched the wiring at the back of the alt.
Bugger.
So he lengthened the wires and fitted new terminals and refitted and said might not be the problem but we will see. I know these guys and they are pretty much the best in our area.
So i start the bush pig up... 14.3volts. Great. Fixed.
While i was waiting a gentleman came in with his 1 month old 200 tojo wanting a dual battery set up fitted. Hes from Pt Pirie. These guys reputation is really good. He'll be back Thursday for the quoted 6 to 7 hour job including power sockets and 12 pin trailer plug etc and bcdc redarc charging system fitting. I think its around $4000. for the job. The old couple are towing a caravan on their extended tours around Austraila that started 15 yrs ago. Lucky buggers.

I fitted 5 tyres to the bush pig yesterday. Ive had them for a couple years. I took of 235×65×16 and fitted 750×16 dunlop road grippers onto the original rims that were supposed to be on it. Now ive got a speedo thats only about 5kms out and lighter steering. Still got bright pink rims tho. Noticed the 750's are about 2 inches higher that the 235×65's. No wonder the speedo was 16 kmh out.

Noticed some drips on garage floor the other day and upon investigation was fuel dripping off chassis next to tank so assumed the worst thinking tank had formed a leak but upon further investigation discovered was coming from join of short section of rubber fuel hose and hard plastic line just before lift pump and running down the line onto chassis- replaced rubber fuel hose section and all sorted-that short section of rubber hose could be good place for a removable mesh inline filter.

Yes I had seen it for sale on and off for a long time, its been sitting idle in sellers yard.
Last message I got from the seller at about 5pm Sat arvo was "I washed it now it wont start"
That gave me an hour of "diagnostic thought" before arriving in Kal.
Solved in about 5 mins, loose negative lead.
Next morning checked fluid levels, drove home.

I finally fitted the new 90 fuel tank to my perentie yesterday. Went in great. Luckily for me the PO had disconnected the main fuel pickup line and left it there and ran another line to the monstrous fuel tank he fitted in the rear cargo area. Just gotta wire up the sender unit and low fuel light. No wiring there at all. Might try sort out the reverse lights while im in the rats nest they call the wiring behind the dash and finding the wiring harness to locate the reverse light wires that go to the rear. I love playing with wiring...NOT.

Hi Rod - just a (hopefully helpful) hint...
You're probably aware, but just in case you're not, the standard Perentie reverse light setup needs the engine to be running for the reverse lights to function.
I've bypassed this by wiring my reversing light to a dash switch which has a warning LED.

This weekends job was replacing the heater fan.
Having pulled the heater out (which required disconnecting the alternator and starter wiring because someone had run the harness through rather than behind the lower heater bracket) I fed the fan motor with WD40 and got it to run - but not as fast as it should.
Solution was to replace fan with one out of a 70 series Toyota (one of my sons has a thing about 70 series and had a couple of spare heaters)
Anyhow only needs slight mods to fit the LR fan snail.
While there got carried away and replaced foam seals and foam on flaps in the heater, which took a lot longer than the fan.
Now all assembled and painted up - reinstall tomorrow when paint dry.

Sitting sorting out wiring for the "new" heater fan motor amd just realised that 70 series fan impeller is reverse pitch to the LR impeller - can run motor in reverse but thwn impeller efficiency is poor.
Impellers also not swappable so it's been a somewhat wasted exercise.

Well it seems that not too many heater fans run in the same direction as the Defender/Perentie. Best I could find was from a 1998 Magna (similar in same era Lancers and Nissan Pintarra), problem being that the impellers are slightly bigger than the hole in the LR casing.
Anyhow after some adjustment to the hole with the die grinder I got it fitted (nowhere near as neat and easy as the Toyota fan had been) and running OK on the bench using the existing resistor to get the two speeds.
Once reinstalled there was however no action - power available, but an issue with the switch and/or earthing thereof - yet to be sorted out.

Then filled 12ltrs diesel into tank. Watched fuel gauge. It moved. Yay got a working fuel gauge and a proper fuel tank now. Im pleased. Well, after a few big weeks the 6x6 is back together. I replaced all the shocks with Old Man Emu ones including the rear shock mounts so now they are all pin/pin type cylinders. I stripped the cab and applied the car builder brand butyl sound deadener to all surfaces, 6mm foam to the walls, transmission tunnel, doors and roof and then re did the vinyl floor with a mass loaded vinyl all the way up the bulkhead to the underside of the dash. I filled all the gaps where the gear levers penetrate the tunnel and where the wires penetrate the bulkhead with a closed cell foam. The interior plastic trims where all perishing and cracked so I covered these with carpet to tidy them up and also to help absorb some of the sound.
While I had the cab apart I installed interior led lights with door switches, central locking, a stereo head unit with a reversing camera so I can safely get out of the Coles car park as well as one of those new fang dangle XRS uhf radios from GME. I've just ordered a new fascia plate from the laser cutters for the roof console as this is where I mounted the radio, light switches and UHF.
All in all it was a bigger job than I expected and it was a bit of a challenge refitting the trims after adding the thickness of the carpet and sound deadening but well worth it. The truck is still noisy by nature but it has taken the edge of and now I can actually have a conversation at 100ks an hour.

Well today I got my Perentie down to get inspected for roadworthy..... and the list was.....
*The inspector was soooo awe-struck with its awesomeness that he passed it without question...
ok ok...not quite, but it did pass first up as:
*ONE BIG ONE - as its older than 25 years, in WA it doesnt require a immobiliser to be fitted.
*it is leak free mostly (and it has oil in it) little leak from sump but that takes a few days to show after a good degrease [tonguewink]
*I had already removed front blackout lights, removed blackout switch knobs.
*I stripped and cleaned brakes, painted hubs/wheels.
*Removed rear seats.
*Removed side antenna mounts.
*Fitted an ignition key.
*Added some padding around roll bar braces.
*Replaced a few globes.
*Replaced indicator stalk assembly.
*Had leaking radiator repaired locally.
*Replaced top / bottom radiator hoses.
*Replaced side mirror that fell off on the drive home.
When I went to collect I asked the old guy "are you a Land Rover convert yet?" (I send all my customer vehicles that need a roadworthy to him)
He answered "no I am over them, especially that one, once round the block and I was over it, my arms are sore, give me a Land Cruiser Sahara"
The top and bottom radiator hoses are available very easily through Burson auto parts!

Its not a bad truck, looking at the logbook its spent its life as a driver training vehicle from what i can tell. So no claim to fame in active service.
98K, original engine, gearbox, canvas (which is worn out) but its on its third clutch!

I also had weird stuff happening. Engine shut down would only work with indicators on. Engine shut off working sometimes. Live wire earthing somewhere on occasions draining the battery in 1/2 hr. But ok other times. All sorted now.

Ok today i looked at the indicator problem. First checked fuses. All good except for heater fan fuse (30 amp???). So i replaced that fuse with 15amp. Tried indicators, still no good. Hazards still working fine. So i checked voltages on all fuses, all good. Ruled out bad contacts. So i pulled the steering column covers off. Bugger me the indicators started working again. So i wiggled tbe connectors and wiring around, still ok. Wiggled switch lever, worked blackout switch, tugged and pulled wiring. Still working ok. Stuffed if i know what the fault is. Cannot reproduce it. So i refitted the covers and it still works. Then i removed the dash facia and replaced the blown fuel gauge globe and removed the green condoms of the remaining gauge globes. Will test if the gauges are brighter tonight. Refitted the dash. Then removed the telltale lights assy and military blackout cover. Cleaned up the contacts and cleaned the fascia. Would love to replace the telltale assy as the indicator pics on the front are worn away. Refitted it and tested it. Ok i guess. Gonna go for a drive tonight. Love driving my perentie.

There is an astounding amount of wiring that runs from the instrument panel along the dash tray to the middle of the firewall. Its not that well protected and there’s heaps of older style bullet connectors. It’s no wonder electrical problems occur.

I'm sure you have checked but...
The fuse panel on mine has poor connectivity between the fuses and the holder, age, light corrosion or tarnish and my indicators randomly stop working.
Also with a poor connection the fuses can get hot, I had one of the head light fuses start to lightly smoke the other day.
Lucas electrics and old army requirements makes an average electrical system.
P.S and yes as others have pointed out, that dam hazard switch, i sometimes have to on/off, on/off a few times and again the indicators come back to life [tonguewink]

Today, well yesterday I filled up at the servo!
Not something I have to do often, as most of my driving is start/stop very short runs. Even with poor short runs I'm getting 11L/100KM which is better than most new turbo diesels around town and it doesnt suffer EGR faults, DPF faults, sooting up or complete engine failures!

Today i got a bit busy chasing fittings for my power steering conversoin on the bushpig. Went to several well known hydraulics suppliers and hose repairers. No good. Went to Enzed in Wingfield and they actually took the time to make up a fitting for me to adapt the genuine isuzu pressure hose to the pump. Cost $40.
Then they supplied a flange fitting for free as well but it really didnt suit my needs.
Then i went to MTQ and got the correct flange fitting for the supply side of the pump. $23. Very happy.
Spoke to them about a turbo kit for bushpig. Around $2700. Better than KLR. Might have to look into it maybe. They also can put bushpig on a dyno there and tune the pump in a bit better and service injectors and pump too. They have done a few in the past they said. Might be worth saving up some pennies.
Next job...getting a drop arm to fit the D1 box. Then fit it all.
Oh gotta get a reservoir bracket too.

So i tackled the oil leaky lhr hub. Some ppl just should not be allowed within 500 mtrs of a land rover with a spanner in their hand. The reason the hub seal leaked, the seal was bashed into the hub so deep it was hardly touching the seal surface of the stub axle. The seal surface was rusty. Also the wrong spacer was fitted between the inner seal and the inner nut. Had to buy a new spacer and of course lock washer. Already had a new seal. Also had to replace the wheel bearings. They were still ok but starting to mark up a bit. Cheap enough. Timken bearings fitted. Repacked with grease.
Now the brake adjuster snail. Another stufc up. This time by the RAEME mechanic that didnt fit it correctly. The snail hadnt engaged into the adjuster nut splines. Too many spacer washers fitted in the wrong places. So the snail was buggered where the little bolt passes thru it. I managed to get a spare snail kit that had been opened and was told use what i need and bring the rest back. Thanks Pete from PCB Land Rovers. I fitted it the way i thought it should be. It works. So cleaned up all the backing plate and all the rest of the stuff. Refitted the cleaned up shoes and refitted the hub and adjusted the bearings. Fitted the drum and adjusted the brakes. Refitted axle and maxidrive drive member. Tightened the bolts. Refitted the wheel. All good. But i hurt my bloody right knee. So ill be limping for a few days now. Power steering maybe tomorrow. Its just started raining a bit here in Adelaide. More fun...

but as I like to point out to one of the guys at work I can almost legally seat 10 people in archie by putting 5 in his car, putting his car on the tray and then 4 passangers in the 6b.
he wasnt happy to measure the tray and realise that it could actually be done... But I'd get pinged for overhang and probably the passanger load out.
the 110's can get into the 9l/100 with nice driving and Im quitely confident I could squeeze one down to the very high 8's reliably.

14 and worse you say?? that is bad, mine gets 11.22/100km to 12.61, BUT is pretty well empty all the time.
Lets face it though, a Perentie could use double or triple that in fuel and its still cheaper to run than any new vehicle that ends up having an engine, turbo, transmission failure...

Today i pulled my finger out and put the social media down, at 11.30am[emoji6], and went outside. It was a bit sunny so i put up the gazebo over the bonnet and secured it to the earth. Then i took off the manual steering box. I removed the d1 pitman arm and fitted the defender one to the d1 steering box. I then fitted the box from the top down into place. I had to remove the stay bracket first. Dropped straight in. Bolted it up. Refitted the stay bracket. Refitted the shaft. Cut the protector cover off a bit so it clears the power steer box. Then i removed the cover of the engine and fitted the power steer pump. I then fitted the pressure hose, thanks Bearman, and tightened it. Had to call it a day coz i had to go out. Tomorrow i will have to arrange the reservoir and supply and return hoses.

Today i finally fitted up the reservoir and had to buy a couple of oil safe hoses for the bigger supply line to the pump. One hose was of a vt v6 commodore coz i needed a 180deg bend and then a brass joiner and some straight oil safe hose up to the reservoir. Then i modified the d1 return hose and pipe. I removed the main connector and hose that joins to the box and deleted the steel pipe. Pushed the hose onto the reservoir and filled the reservoir. I undone the bleed nipple on top of the box and waited for the oil to come out. A bit of pressure was applied, i blew into the reservoir, to get the oil to come out the bleed nipple. Tightened the nipple. Topped up the reservoir and crossed my fingers and started the bushpig up. No oil leaks. Steering was incredibly light. Could turn the wheels, which were on ramps, with one finger. WOW. Incredible. Cant wait to try it out on the road. Just gotta fix the front tailshaft. Cant grease the uni's so im gonna remove it and make it easier to grease the ujoints. Got a little vibe so will check the uni's while its out. Thats tomorrows job...maybe...lol

Well today, Saturday, i removed the front propshaft and checked the uni joints. Both good. Has had a new shaft recently, in the last 5 yrs, coz i couldnt get the grease gun onto the nipples. So i fitted longer nipples and used my die grinder to grind out a couple of reliefs so the nipples dont break off at full flex. Greased the joints. Both took at least 8 pumps of grease. Hmmm. Refitted the prop shaft. All good. Finally took the bushpig for a drive. WOW. Totaly different experience. So light and easy. So pleased with myself for pulling my finger out and doing it. Best thing ive done to it so far.

Hi all, on Wednesday morning I removed the rear diff cover coz the fill plug was not doing up. I suspected the plate thread was stripped. Took the cover off. Plug was just turning and not tightening up. So I removed the plate on another diff I had gotten for the right price, just for parts, that the PO had removed from a S3 with an angle grinder, explains why it was free, and I cleaned it up and painted it white. Well bugger me its gloss white. The cap on the spray can said flat. Hmmm. I dont really care that much. New gasket and clean oil, job done. Now the original cover had the brass shouldered plug in it and I had trouble removing it. Turns out it had 3 sealing washers on it? WTF? I spose it dont matter now. The plate thread was damaged so im keeping it for posterity. No other reason. Coz if I throw it away, for sure I'll need it. No pics.

After returning from my Cameron Corner trip - the Perentie needed a little loving.
* Wiped down the interior (very, very dusty)
* Adjusted the drivers door. I worked out that there is a support bracket that is behind the striker plate, and comparing the drivers side bracket to the passenger side, the drivers side was bent (slightly). Re-aligning it meant that the striker plate sat flush (it was not sitting square). Hopefully the door won't fly open when I drive along anymore.. [bigsad]
* Checked all of the tyre pressures - all good.
* Fitted the Jerry can covers:

Well today was the day. I removed the roof rack. The bolts were rusted and one actually snapped off. I then removed the old canopy of bushpig, including the whirly bird and some sort of plastic coated canvas that the PO had fitted with tek screws and painted bright PINK. After removing the bracketry that supported the whirly bird and about 40 tek screws i undone all the canvas ties and ropes and the front clamps and took of the worn canvas. Might get a new roof put in it. The sides are still ok tho faded. I fitted a new bikini hex cam top from ROBCO. Looks great. Had to get new pinch weld for the sides as the old ones were toast. It was relativly easy to fit but did require a bit of stretching. Its fitted now and i like it. No more rain leaks now i hope[emoji16]. Just gotta fit the lower rope thingys to tie the cabin back part down. Waiting for a couple of new clamp handles as i broke one and cracked another. Found it was easier to loosen the 10mm nuts before doing the clamps up or undoing them.[emoji6][emoji6]. Id love to get a new canopy but its way beyond my monetary reach for now. Some time ago I fitted LED tail lights to 49-043 but failed to let everyone know!!
*They are the 90mm NAS spec, wipac.
*Horribly expensive, but seem very durable.
*Fantastic visibility.
*Yes the original are cheap to replace and do the job but I wanted something that made the Perentie more visible from the rear especially if on the side of the road with the hazards on.
*Are still Land-Rover style.
*It also forced me to sort out the 30 years of birds nest wiring.

*Was driving down the freeway and the, I dunno 15/20 year old? canvas decided to die.
*20 Days later Robco supplied a shiny new one! dam awesome.
*Added a tow hitch from the U.S that suits a hummer.

Doesn't need years to get that effect - just an idiot with a rattle gun. I broke a perfectly good half inch extension bar trying to loosen the wheel nuts after having a new tyre fitted a few years back. Had to borrow a set of 3/4" drive sockets (plus my 2m of pipe) to loosen them.

Not mine but we replaced the gasket to the water inlet manifold above the water pump. Original gasket was rotten. One to keep an eye on. Pia to get off tho.
Also removed rear diff cover to straighten after a meeting with a large boulder. Going to give it a shave soon.
Replaced rear brake pads which had typically ground themselves to bits on one trip. We had the same issue on our old D1with dirt lodging atop the rear pads. ..feeding in like grinding paste. Dumb design😐

Very nice work there mate.Thanks. Before I get all the seats back in I think I'm going to rhinoliner the entire inside of the tub and floorboards as well, but am concerned about thickness to leave the cargo rings intact and unimpeded as they recess. I'm going to see about some test sprays to look at the thickness, as I need them to recess so they aren't a tripping point for passengers in the new rear seats, and need them to remain in place for cargo, lashing, etc when the seats are folded up and out of the way. Anyone done something similar? SWMBO and I are 'debating' about exterior. Our son and I want to leave it as the military intended. She and our daughter want me to respray it a LR grey. This particular Perentie has an engraved unit symbol at the rear (Pelican with a mail pouch I've not yet been able to fully trace) and regardless of where we land on it I'll not lose or cover that (about which all agree). I hate the idea of losing the camo, but their point is that we have another, unmodded Perentie and that should be enough for the boys. The debate shall continue so long as the current work and fitting is the focus. The canvas is shot so I'll also need to figure out a new top, from Robco or other TBD. I have a canvas sewing machine and used it for my offroad poptop camper surround a few years ago, but don't think I have the skill for cutting in the various bits for this.

Regarding covering the interior, just make sure you can allow things to dry out without corrosion problems. Simple rubber mats might be the go.

Lining completed and rock slider installed. I should have the rollbar, rollbar extensions (for the new rear seats and three point harnesses) and bullbar zinc/powder-coated in the next week or two to match the rock sliders and reinstalled, then mount the seats and the interior and structural work will more or less be done. I've got to figure out the new top - I'd like two clear vinyl zip outs for better visibility than the standard top. They are a bit more expensive than others but I would recommend themWhile not the overall look I want per se, I'm hoping Robco can make a Perentie friendly canvas that has improved side visibility such as the one in this photo and will be contacting them. Ideally the clear panels can have a black cover flap to rollup or down and the entire sides can rollup as with the original canvas. I'm imagining this will all take things so far out of standard that there will be an associated cost, but using them I'm also certain the final product should fit like a glove. Should work out OK. One point I will make that I have found (with Series 2a not Perentie, but same issue). Having canvas (or anything else) over the clear plastic windows results in abrasion of the clear plastic and loss of clear vision. This would be particularly the case for the Perentie with the vibration from the Isuzu. I have found this to be an issue even just operating with the sides/back rolled up and no cover on the plastic. It may not be as much a problem if you live in a place less dusty than here.

Agree with John regarding the plastic. It also hinders access to the tub through the windows.

They are standing up ok so far, much better than the split rims and the Goodyears that were on them. I’d consider changing to All Terrains when these are due, but I’ll see what wear I get first. When I was looking at M/T I rang around about both Toyo and BFG KM3’s but they had no stock of BFG’s and the fellow said they were slow selling. I preferred the Toyo anyway as I think they’re a stronger tyre.

Nice idea, how many microns?IIRC they're 7 micron nominal.
Whilst this has been done for decades (adding a cartridge to the sedimentor) you have to be a little careful having a filter on the suction side of the pump, you can lose prime due to the restriction.
And the sedimentor works brilliantly dropping a lot of crap out of suspension and keeping the main filter relatively clear.

Will see how it goes, on my Disco (300tdi) I run an inline gauze type filter that trap a bit of crud the sedimentor has let through. I run a veg oil blend in the Disco so it is more prone to getting gelling etc.

who tightened them up?
tightened hard with your wheel nut spanner is quite adequate.....don't use rattleguns.
I can always undo my wheel nuts.
if I was you I'd be checking all the others. you are gonna get caught short with the wheelnuts or the jack or both.
.....and I'd fill the jack and check its operation....and store it up right. Many D2 owners got caught out to find their bottle jack not operable because it was stored on its side and gradually leaked.....corrugations do wonders.

.....and I'd fill the jack and check its operation....and store it up right. Many D2 owners got caught out to find their bottle jack not operable because it was stored on its side and gradually leaked.....corrugations do wonders.
Tightened by the army [or frontline] - Jack is kind of rusty so may be a bin job but will see what I can do. Will get a rattle adaptor thing for my DeWalt impact driver [same as the NRMA guy used, and a 27mm I think impact socket and unwind the rest of my nuts and tighten with the wheel brace.
Depending on how nice the tax man is and how much KLR will cost me to fix the issue with white smoke under load i'll be hoping to get some 'wolf' rims and tubeless tyres [those take offs from the Toyota mob seem like the go] as well.

yep,
nup
Or too busy?
yep.
the cheapest new radiator was going to cost me 1200 and 2 weeks delay
the cheapest new intercooler that needed a custom radiator was going to cost me $900
just recoring the old radiator was going to cost $900 and at least a weeks delay for an oem style core
modding the new radiator OR having a custom one made was going to cost me $1500 either way
Making the mounts, faffing having to go and find bits and bobs and generally jinking around would take who knows how long between normal work times and the other crap I get roped into.
I needed it running in less than a fortnight for a job
easier to pay for it, get it upgraded and get it all in one go.
for those intereseted, the old core is a narrow 1/2 inch 3 core with the finning at 19 fins an inch, the new one is a wide 3/4 inch core with the fins at eith 15 or 13 fins per inch and its getting a custom shroud to better fit the thermos While being positioned in such away that the viscous hub and oem landrover type fan (if I ever manage to find the narrow clutch version) will still fit behind the radiator, and why...
more cooling with better dust resistance.
and no, with what its got I dont need the intercooler, it runs nice and rock steady as is but on paper it should provide a marginal improvement in economy at normal cruise speeds and load. As the name of the game is Range.... Arkies getting a front mount intercooler (and in no small way is it to do with I am getting naffed at having to pull the cross over pipe to do my valve checks every 3-5 months)

Enough gazing, time for an update;
Passed rego, mechanic said it was good to finally get a Perentie that passed first time for a change, next day new shocks, new headlight switch and hub seal kits ordered, lucky I did as the right rear hub started leaking and the day after the headlight switch and front right shock failed coming home from a day drive.
Shocks are in, I snapped a stud off the ring retainer, got a new one and replaced it, got Recovery Shocks, Made in Australia apparently, by who I have no idea, seem to work well after a drive around the farm, battery light came on yesterday.
Just finished trying to figure what it was, turns out I have accidently pulled a wire out from the plug in the back of the alternator when working on the car, it's the field excitation plug, I've done a temporary fix till I can get an auto elec to look at it

Had the rear shockers replaced as knackered, Terrafirma long travel 2” pro sport. Big change to be honest, considering terra’s on the front now. Also front driveshaft universal replaced.

If you go Terrafirma front shocks I went with big bore expedition shocks with Terrafirma heavy load coils (both +2" ) due to the weight of the Isuzu engine.
The rears I have the Sport Pro (+2) but havent worked out what coils I want to use yet as the Perentie rear end is really light but I still want reasonable load carrying.

Hi Dazza
Will the Big Bore fit with the standard Perentie coils?

Hi Dazza
Will the Big Bore fit with the standard Perentie coils?
Yes the big bores come in std height.
TF130 - defender big bore rear shocks std.
*While I have no doubt there are plenty of better suspension around, I've generally found the Terrafirma to be good value for money.
*Most and more of it is made in Thailand which I have no problem with as it seems to last the distance.
*I've had 2 rear leaking shocks and one that broke the top eye, out of prolly 100 or so sets over the years.
*Freight cost from the U.K for complete kits though is insane since cov
*As I said before I've not nutted out a good coil for the rear of a Perentie, the std original ones I dont really think were designed for any reasonable load, throw a couple of gearboxes or some firewood and its dragging its arse a bit.

Hi Dazza,
Went with your suggestion a got the front fitted with Terrafirma Big Bore Expedition 2”, feels good so far. Just drove 1700 Kms from near Melbourne to Ipswich Queensland and the truck didn’t miss a beat, suspension was fine, much improved on before, thanks!

Hi All,
Gave the RFSV a couple of long awaited Christmas presents with a LED headlight conversion and also a water proofing of the original canvas.
Very happy with the performance of the LED headlights and the canvas beads water again! Hopefully a drier ride this winter than in 2021.
Regards Warrick.

Hi Greg,
I just washed the canvas with water and used a broom to remove any marks or dirt that didn't move with water.
It came up pretty clean before I applied the water proofing. You could probably use a light detergent and then hose off well.
Ultimately a new canvas will be the next purchase but I hope to get a bit more life out of this canvas before that. I will see how it performs this winter.
I can't really complain though as the canvas on my RFSV is the same one that I have had since I purchased the vehicle from Frontline in 2014.
I am not sure what the average lifespan of a Robco Canvas is but mine must be coming up to 10 years at least.
Regards Warrick.
