I understand that there is a need for the sponsorship, not complaining about the fact that nissan sponsors the show, I think I said that in my post, but every second sentence was "My nissan patrol this" and "My nissan patrol that". Then after only asking the owner of the property that has skytrek on it a few questions they was time asking him about his two nissan patrols. I'd prefer to know some history about the property or something.

I think its possible to be tactful with product placement without going over the top.

I think hes good for the public conception (misconception?) of 4w-driving. He keeps it clean, smooth and simple. I think its too simple and smooth but the majority of what he does and explains to the average Joe makes us look good and we need that.

Yes I watched the show this weekend too. Did like the track up to the look out. Aside from the product placement. ( was there any? Nahh...) What also came across from the show for me was how deep your pocket need to be or at least if you were to get all the gear in the show. Not overly real world. Certainly helps when you are fully equipped by sponsors.

Yeah, thats it.

Would be good to see a show like that on free to air TV with some more detailed tech segment, DIY stuff, like welding rocksliders that sort of thing. But then if you do that you arent buying the products they are advertising, which they need to do to fund the show.

I am no Pat Callinan sympathiser by any stretch...but go back and watch some of the old 4x4 monthly DVD's, and he is on record, plenty of times, saying "you are far better off buying a second hand fourby and with any money left over, spend it on mods.." Unless you have the ability to do things yourself, all mods/accessories - especially in the 4wd game - are going to cost.

If you look at the web site, the patrol he drives has not had a great deal of mods done to it, compared to many other 4wd's on the road.

It was mentioned above he slagged LR for dependability on a desert crossing. I reckon there are some Puma owners - and discos and rangie owners - who would silently agree.

Full credit to the bloke ... he is doing what many of us can only dream of...make a good living from something he loves doing...and take his family along for the ride at the same time. Seems the tall poppy syndrome is still a part of our landscape - as Australyan as a dogs eye

I like the concept of the show but yes the sponser adverts drive me insane but its more aimed at the novice not the experenced

Absolutely. I know if I was doing a really serious desert crossing that really did rely on a reliable vehicle, I'd be going with an old Toyota.
