    Hi Oldsalt,

I use Lightroom 3, i can't recommend it enough, it is fast, allows great indexing of all your images and is non destructive.

If you have never used it before it takes a little time to get your head around it, but once you understand how the software works, it is very intuitive. There are many tutorials and vids on the net so you can see how it works.

Adobe provide a fully featured demo download. LR4 is about to be released soon (it has just gone BETA) so LR3 can be had for bargain basement prices. I just bought a full retail version for $121.00 from City software.

    Cheers

    Steve

lightroom three here to as well as photoshop, lightroom can handle all but difficult retouching and manipulation and is heaps easier to use .lr3 will run {of sorts} on my little dell netbook to touch up images while traveling as well, it also handles raw file format..
adobe software is the industry standard as well.
    cheers mark

I use The Gimp. Suggest trying it, especially if you have not become used to other software.

I use PS CS5 which is excellent but takes some time to learn. Prior to this I used PS Elements which I found very good and easy to use. Elements also has an excellent tagging feature.

Lightroom 3, CS5 (photoshop) and Photoshop Elements as well for me. It depends what you need/want to do. I believe Elements is pretty inexpensive and does all the basics without too much hassle.

Serif Photo Plus 9.0, which is an excellent 'freebie' Sometimes Photoshop 6.0.

I use Photoshop CS5 and Gimp in the past.
I also use a few photoshop plugins but tend to get rid of them once I can manually do the same work the plugins do.

Nikon Capture NX2 will be a good choice specially if you like that the software do not delete the settings in the camera.
Second choice will be PSCS3 or PSCS5
