Thread: Some advice please

After the 4 speed with integral TC was dropped in the early 80's they used the LT230 up to about 89 I think. Could be a bit later than that - I'm sure someone will correct me.

If you are after bullet proof, the early 4 speeds are VERY strong, but are quite notchy and truck like - not suprising when you see one - they look like they could have come out of a truck...

1988 was the last year of the LT230. Borg Warner came with the 1989MY.

All 3.9 are Borg Warner, and I believe some of the last 3.5.

However I think that the problems with BW are a bit overblown.
The failure areas are the rear output shaft and viscous coupling.
The rear output shaft costs GBP80 and about 4 hours of time to fix, and it goes at 160-200KK. I just replaced mine.
The viscous is quite expensive at $700 new but they do not go that often and usually only with different sized wheels front to back. Mine is still fine at 211KK , and I bought a BW for $26 with 300Kk on it and the viscous is good.

The LT230 is not trouble free with centre diff shims dying if the front axle speed is different eg wheelspin or wrong size tyres and the intermediate shaft flogging out. The BW is MUCH more civilised than the clunky , sloppy, whineing LT230.

Yeah, but a set of shims is $8... And with mine open at the moment to do a freshen up, all the gears, etc are still like new after 300KKM. A full kit for mine including bearings, shims, seals and gaskets was under $100 - bought locally straight off the shelf.

But the clunky, sloppy whinny bit is about right though...

Look on the Bright Side, if you only use it as a daily-driver, then you can return to the Good 'Ole Days when the VC packs up. - Take off the REAR prop shaft and you've got a V8 powered, Front Wheel Drive 'Mini' on steroids. !

And it's all British !
