why put another boring, common or garden variety V8 into it...

You could try a Mazda 20B with suitable trans, or, check out this page...

Look on the bright side, - you could'nt use much more fuel than what it does now...

Philip, It's not just the output shaft. The chain gets stretched also and the price is not worth it to fix it IMHO
One of the best things I did on my 93 vogue SE was to put the LT230 transfer case in it from a 96 Disco. My clunks are gone and it is as quiet as the BW was. I think the worst part of the later RRC is the BW transfer case. If buying another later RRC, that would be the first job I would do.

With the engine, there are signs to look for in regards to liner/cracked block or head gasket issues.

Check the oil for water contamination, look at oil filler cap and look in to the rocker cover.

Is the exhaust steamy? Does the engine miss when it's cold?

    Bubbles in overflow tank etc.

I wish I knew these things before I bought mine, but anyways, I've learned a lot and have gained new skills & knowledge.

Well from posts I have seen over the years , the 38A seems to do the chain and the RRC seems to do the output shaft.
The BW I bought for $26 has about 330KK on it and the chain seems OK, while the output shaft was stripped.
You are correct on the cost to fix, but I intend to rebuild the one I bought in 2013 and swap them over. I was able to buy a VC with reputed 80KK on it for $80 and that is the major rebuild cost with a UK cost of $700.

Horses for courses but I will stick to my BW.

If it has got a separate gearbox and Transfer case it is an LT230 transfer and most likely an LT77 gearbox.
The LT95 gearbox/transfer case is all in one.
