I pulled the MAF apart and gave it a really good clean with throttle body cleaner and it seems to be running really well now. I haven't had a chance to drive it but idling and revving it doesn't puff black smoke like it was before and the idle is nice and smooth. When holding the revs at 2000rpm and giving it a stab it was blowing a heap of black smoke from unburnt fuel, and smelled really fuelly, now doing it there is a puff of grey smoke and no fuel smell so I think it may be fixed. I will need to take it for a good run though and see what the fuel usage is like on the highway.

Secondly, what is the arrangement of the upstream components in the air intake before the MAF? They are quite sensitive to not having linear air flow into them, and an elbow will direct the air off centre. The flywire mesh disc is supposed to straighten the airflow but can't correct for asymmetric air flow.
Thanks for that - I think you may have helped me fix an issue on mine - with the air cleaner assembly on it always ran funny, but I made it with an elbow that attached to the MAF... I thought it was a restriction but that never made sense as the air cleaner assembly is for a much bigger engine.

    (sorry for the hijack)

It's still doing it, running rough and rich, puffing black smoke. But it's intermittent, it will idle fine and run great, then start playing up. I think I'll have to start tracing wiring to see if there's a short.

On another note, brake master cylinder was leaking so I thought I'd get another one. I found a used one and went to pick it up only to discover it was different. Up to 1994 Disco 1 are the same as mine, but the one I found off a 3/94 was like the later ones. Anyway, it has the same brake configuration as mine has, one line to the rear and one line to each front. I grabbed it and the proportioning valve and fitted it to my RRC. I had to make a couple of new lines but that was fine, I have a flaring tool. Bled it all and the pedal is nice and hard, but there is no stopping power, it's like there is no vacuum boost, but there is. I have read that the proportioning valve can go over centre, but this generally restricts fluid flow, I have good flow to all bleed screws and no air. I have also read that I can pull the valve apart and clean it. If the valve was not operating correctly, would it cause this issue?Just to remind people, this has Patrol diffs and Patrol calipers so any fix that may apply to the RRC split braking system probably won't work on this one.

Make sure that the o-ring between the booster and the master cylinder is present and correct. They are quite thin and easy to lose.

That was exactly it. When I fitted the replacement M/C I didn't even check to see if the O ring was still on it, it wasn't. Fitted the one off the original M/C and it's all good now.
