Dash cam stops and starts with ignition, not sure if Go pro would do that.
    Cheers

And a dash cam records everything in 3-5 minute files, which is good for a dash cam but is a pita when using it as a trip recorder and you have dozens of files at the end of the day.

I have a Garmin GDR 45. It has a port for a rear camera, can be set up to record when the car is stopped. Monitors the battery voltage and will turn off if it gets to low. Mine is hooked up to the cigar lighter via multi socket so it stops and starts with the ignition.

Plays back in 3 or 4 minute length files and records GPS and speed. Also has an automatic snap shot if it detects a sudden stop or crash.

    Available on EBay.

the op said crash cam , not dash cam.

I know what a go pro is and my mate has one permanently mounted , not on his hat but on his dash.

So, is your "crash cam" running at all times just like my mates go pro.....if so what is the difference?

    you could start here...

Techmoan - Techmoan - Dashcam Review: DDPai M6+ is the best mini cam I've?used

    I'd suggest you consider '1296-P' resolution, at least for a front-facing camera. 1080 is ok, but once you've used 1296 . ..

I've currently got an Xiaomi like this, but I think mine is "Original" (cheaper).
    - And it needs a Chinese nerd with the software and a smartphone to set the correct Time and Date... Dunno about the 'International' version below...
Optical quality/sharpness and reproduction is very good indeed, regardless of price-point. I would buy another one.
Also, a cheapy for permanent REAR mounting is a good idea, and would tend to intimidate the tail-gater...

and this is the 'Techmnoan' recommended one :- http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Yoko-Faci...algo=undefined

I used to have one of these, but "executed" it by mistake when it continually beeped at me.... turned out to be a faulty SD card. Quality was equally as good as the Xiaomi, which is very good in low light. - Late evening still reproduces with a bright sky and good detail elsewhere...

To my way of thinking, if I were removing your lightbar and I saw that flashing light, all that that would mean is that I had another job to do before I vacated the scene.

Im leaning to the Blackvue with built in GPS/wifi/128gig card, probably single cam.
I realise they fit them up at the mirror to hide them.Im thinking of fitting it to the Kuda mount.Am I going to get enough depth mounting it low.
    Cheers

A purpose built "Dashcam" or "crashcam" differs from a GoPro type in that they tend to loop record, Ie when they reach the end of the mem card they start from the beginning again. They also have a "G"sensor that will shut the camera down in the event of an impact so the footage of the crash is not lost or written over. This will also turn the cam on if you have been parked and an impact occurs to the car. Mine turns on if I slam the tailgate! 32 gb card records from home to Brisbane and about a 1/3 of the way home before it overwrites again.

Would mounting it low on the dash risk cooking it as it gets very hot on the lower dash on a hot day?
