When we go out for the day standard practice is to turn the PC and modem off at the wall. This now means that the phone doesn't work so incoming calls do not register.

I haven't detected any improvement in speed etc. I know from the Speed Test that I have gone from 5 to 26 but it is not noticeable. There are only two nodes serving the whole town.

I did tell Telstra when they called that they fib. That they do a deal to get you on board but then do not honour it. All previous promises of no charge ancillaries are now supposed to be back on the free list. We'll see........

They are sending me a new upgraded modem which supposedly has a sim card in it so that if the NBN goes out I will still have access to the internet. Supplying it free as apparently I am on some special customer list. No idea what this means......
I think Telstra were pretty keen to keep their existing customers, as I did the"self install", just went to one of their shops got the modem for free and plugged it in the old phone line. I'm not sure if you can do this for internet access but I only wanted the phone. The modem has provision for a sim card, but I think you either have to forward it to another number, preferably a mobile in a power failure, or you pro'ly need a battery back up to use the web/phone in a power outage. I think this is what "garrycol" was referring to, as the modem can jump to the mobile (cell) network if the cable/fibre network is having trouble.

A guy I know got a new mobile (dunno brand, but it wouldn't be Apple) last week and I showed him how to do the Telstra speed test.

Down was 202 mbps, up was 40 something. I found this amazing!

The Mac I'm using just now got 41.5 down and 4.1 up using a 5s iPhone 4g with one bar.

Mine seems fine - this is on my wifi while the TV is streaming Netflix at the same time. What sort of plan is she on and how many using the connection at once?

Update on my NBN , FTTC . After 30 years of being a tech in Telstra I knew I wasn't going with them, there is absolutely no advantage with them now than NBNco owns the network .

I went with the cheapest, Exetel $55 month 50/20/500, which I signed up for a 12month contract Last October & has been brilliant until 2 weeks ago when it fell over , fired up wifi hotspot from my phone , Looked up their outages , .. nothing mentioned , Forums were screaming blue murder , 175 in phone queue, 3hr wait . I finally got onto a help desk in SriLanka & they said there was no outage , 3 days stuffing about and it started crawling along with dropouts & modem reset every 30 min

I cant deal with incompetency , broke my contract , $75 early cancellation fee , Bought a $120 modem from local shop, signed up with AussieBroadband, it was working within hours, All Australian support and help desk. $70 a month 50/20/300 . Lets see how that goes, so far its better than Exetel ever was.

Funny, (off-topic slightly as the crooks are different, not the villainy...) I've recently received two machine voice calls, telling me that this is NBN and they've been trying to contact me ... to sign up immediately or my phone line will be cut off...- 'Please press '1' on your phone...'

    Yeah..... Ri-i-i-i-i-ght.

I answered one the other day who asked to speak to the MIL,,(phone owner) when I asked why ( its at the stage now where nobody gets to the MIL unless they are a family friend) they were quite rude about needing to speak only to her,,
first time we've had one that wasnt polite........

Ive given my landline the chop. Set my mobile to ignore all calls except from my contact list , and then Im selective about answering. If someone else wants me they can text and I'll call them back (no voicemail) or else its not important enough..
