What was that about W XP no longer being supported?
Do the copyright-bytes or assembly code have a use-by-date and then self delete?
    No.
I have never requested any support. Never will. I don't have a LAN or commercial license, its just my desktop that keeps chugging onward... "No longer supported"... marketing BS. Do they think the W95 and XP users are the same as i-phone users?

Just ignore it. What if I got a marketing letter from the Landy dealer saying last century's models will no longer be supported?

Sorry about the slow reply Ron, but a group policy edit should sort it if you really want to stop it updating, or at least get better control over how and when it does.

This covers it in a pretty straightforward manner:

Not supported means no more updates, which means any future security flaws or holes or any problems will not be addressed by Microsoft.

It's a big deal for businesses. At least thats what i hear

    Cheers

On a machine that has no exposure to the internet, or you don't care about whats on it, or what someone else might use it for, you are probably right..

they didn't say it wouldn't run

just that they wouldn't be attempting to patch any more of the myriad of holes and security issues that are still abundant in the OS

i still run an xp box here and it plods along fine but i sure as hell wouldn't be using it without the firewall i have on that subnet after seeing what i have seen on customers machines.

microsoft still put the odd update out for it as well.... so it is supported to a very minor degree unless to cross their palms with many sheckles.

it's a bit of a horse water thing

Rolled back 1 pc and 2 laptops to windows 7.
10 lacks currently and felt a bit slow compared to 7.
Apps store was not bad as was the game selections as i wasted a bit of time playing those. Locking up and mysterious hardware stoppages was it for me.

After rollback all problems have been resolved and everything running as expected.
All in all i would not recommend it.

    Thanks Mark. Very useful.

Now set to "Notify for download and notify for install."

So many hidden menus in Windows.

I just found by accident that right-clicking on the Windows icon in the bottom right brings up a far more useful menu system for quick access to Computer Management and Disc Management, etc.

I had no end of trouble with Windows 10 particularly following updates - so I've gone back to Windows 8.1. No problems since.

After 8 I thought 10 would be terrible,,

but no, just let the thing update, you can make it update on shut down,, get rid of all its "Phone Home" stuff,, delete all the Apps, and its nice.
