hmm ok,, and where do I find subnetmasks?
Goto control panel\network connections, select your connection, right click and select properties. On the General tab select "Internet Protocol (tcp/ip)" and press the properties button. Your should now see the subnet mask under the static IP address. Set the Subnet mask to 255.255.255.0

    More info.
Setting Static IP Address on both computers.
On each computer go to control panel\network connections, select your connection, right click and select properties. On the General tab select "Internet Protocol (tcp/ip)" and press the properties button.
Select "Use the following IP address"
Computer GREEN, set the IP address to 192.168.0.1
Computer BLUE, set the IP address to 192.168.0.2
If you just press OK now the subnet mask will be auto completed

Microsoft is really crappy at networking, especially XP Home edition. The computers argue about who will be Boss, unless you run a SERVER. If you want to fix it buy a Router and let it run the network and do the DHCP.

why dont you just run the network wizard and let it do all the walking, just answer the questions and it works in xp... way better and more secure than doing it manually...

workgroup name needs to be the EXACTLY the same

machine names need to be DIFFERENT

have a username on each machine and you access the other machine using that name

eg if greeny login is mum then you use mum's username and password to map a drive or feature on that machine, and vice versa

in xp there is a section to manage network passwords..

Don't you have a router? Or a switch? How do you connect to the internet?

Sorry, but i haven't seen any this crossover cable stuff in year and the rule then was, never trust a crossover peer to peer connection.

Remember to allow sharing on the volumes on which you want to exchange data. My Computer - drive/folder/volume - right click - sharing and security. Or just dump the data to transfer in shared documents folder.

And if you're allowing shares on your primary drive you probably want a router to hide behind if you're running an always on connection.

    Cheers
    Simon.

Have you SHARED a drive on each computer? I think you're there, Pedro, you just don't know it yet

To share, right click the drive in Explorer, and click "share", fill in the form and you're done.
