    Offset pro's and con's?

    Hi all,
Thinking of changing the rims on my Disco 1, wanting to move to 15 inch rims as the tyres seem to be so much more available and cheaper. I'm planning a 2 inch suspension lift and wanting 32-33inch tyres. My main question is offset or not?

I've gone -4.25 offset to allow me to run 12.5" wide tyres and give mine a wider stance but i think it comes down to personal requirements. Just remember any offset will put extra strain on your wheel bearings so make sure you give the attention they need. as for 15" or 16" tyres these days most of the Nissans and Toyotas come with 16" wheels and anything from 31's through to 35's are not uncommon on 16" rims the added bonus is extra clearance for the brake caliper so one would think it would keep them cooler. Wheel choice is another for us Disco owners as they are not as easy to come by as the other major brands and experience has shown me that pre order is the best option I had. Most tyre shops will be able to order a variety of different wheels for the Disco but most dont know because they have never been asked. I found success talking to the little guy in the back street 4x4 tyre shop in believe it or not Traralgon. So before you decide to drop to 15's look at what options you have and compare the prices of 15" tyres to 16" tyres of the same size ie 32's & 33's and check how far away they are available (where your next planning to travel) I bet you find 16's & 15's very close together and just as common

    I run a 35x12.5x15 BFG KM2 tyre on a 15x8 rim with a -25mm offset.

this combination requires flares and guard trimming as well as at least 2 inch of coil lift and 2 inch body lift.

true, it does add pressure to suspension and bearings, but I havnt had any issues so far.

As said, I’m not sure there is necessarily a big difference in price for tyres suiting 15 or 16 inch rims when getting up into bigger sizes, but at 32 – 33 I think there is just about an argument there.

Whether to fit offset rims or not depends a lot on what you want to achieve with the car

    Pros
Wider track gives more stability off road making it less likely you will tip over
Enables fitment of wider tyres without fouling inner guards or suspension components

    Cons
    More prone to tracking
    Increased wear on wheel bearings
    Increased strain on wheel studs
body modification required to prevent fouling on outer guard
potential for greater attention from Mr Plod

hopefully others can cut and paste the above and add to it.

Thanks for the replies, I'm now thinking of sticking with the 16's and getting a set of 32's. Do you think i'll have much trouble with 32's and 2 inch lift, rubbing etc?
I'm looking for a mix of touring and FUN, my mates have troopies on 33's and I love to show them up in the Disco.. I got a load of stick from them for getting one.

2_Door that is a great looking truck...

a disco on 32's will easily keep up with a Toyota/Nissan on 33's

Its gone about 85% of where they have on 29's BFG muds and nothing else, just need to use the right foot on the V8 a bit more.
