    Starting Again!

I think I know what is wrong with my Disco!

    It is depressed LOL.

Here is my theory: After we spent ages working on it it was starting OK for about a week. Then, as posted recently it stopped starting, and was getting worse and worse to the point I was paranoid it would just give up all together. So yesterday I went back under the bonnet, and reseated all the plugs on all the sensors, and also cleaned the connectors and made sure the plug connectors were tight on the ignition amp on the dizzy. Even thought the engine was hot, it started first time every time about 5 times all afternoon yesterday. This AM it started first time from cold, immeduately firing when I turned the key, revs up to 1500, dropping in steps to 750/800 over about 10 secconds. It is doing exactly what I would expect it to do! And it has not done this for weeks! In fact for weeks it had been turning over without firing at all for 10 secconds or so, then when finally firing only slowly chugging up the revs - 200, 400, 600, 800 - over about 5 secconds. And even then it would often only start if I hit the accelerator as it started firing.

Now, all I did was fiddle under the bonnet. So, I think all she wants is some love and attention and she will run properly. If I stop giving her love and attention she stops running properly. Ergo - she is depressed.

    What do you chaps think??

OR: could it be because I have put the expensive 95 RON petrol in her and not the cheap 91 RON I was using before?

Lets see how it goes next week. Fingers crossed it will continue to start.

she was depressed because you weren't paying her attention and because you were feeding her crap fuel.

I always put the highest octane available in mine and she runs sooooo much better because of it.

I think you may have spent too long under the bonnet in the fumes .Make sure you take regular breaks and get some fresh air

Sounds like one loose connection is all it took.

Now just keep your hands away and all should be good.

It's a Land Rover. You see, what it is is people think they break down or require mountains of work to keep them going, when all it actually is is they require to stay happy is consistant attention.

Which reminds me, must get around to renaming the wife Landie.

As usuall, with this unusuall vehical, things have not stayed so possative!
For about 3 days it was starting briliantly, every time. Then, over the week it has taken a little longer each day to start. Until now it is the same as it ever was, taking an age before it fires, slowly chuggin its way up to operational speeds. It takes what seems like an epoch of cranking before it even appears to fire. When it does, it sounds like it is reving at 10 rpm. then if it manages to maitainn it goes up to 50, then it even starts to register on the tacho, up to 100!!!! Then onwards as per my previous post.

I have not touched anything under the bonet since my last post, and I am still giving her the best fuel, which she is drinking at a rate of 25l per 100km and that is on plain sailing empty roads, between 60 and 100k.

Ducking car, I don't understand it.

If I can get the day of on Friday I am taking it in to a professional to look at. I am still tossing up between two local-ish garages. Les Richmond and AMV, both of which have been reccomended by members of this Forum.

If I don't get it fixed this car wil be in for some very special attention!!!!

    Try these 2 things ...

Before starting it up in the morning ....

    Open the bonnet
Unplug the wire plug connection of the MAF
    Try starting the car ....

A method of starting the car .... Turn ignition ON ... wait 3 seconds ....Turn ignition OFF

Now try to start motor in 1 second bursts .....

    Cheers

I only ever run mine on the highest octain fuel i can get My disco prefers Shell.. I have been too busy to give her attention, it desperately needs
a major tune up my fuel figures are worse than yours but 35's will do that.. Mine starts fine but revs at 2000 then drops to around 800 and hunts or revs high which ever it decides for the day... my Disco has a demon under the bonnet i am yet to exorcise.. a day off work soon and armed with my workshop full of tools and this forum i know it can and will run smooth again

Made no difference. With the MAF disconnected it did not help, slowly tried to chug in to life, but this time cut out after about 3 secconds.

Starting in short bursts had no effect. When it finally fired it behaved exactly as previously described.
