ok I have to ask with all this checking etc have yo sprayed wd40 or similiar over the electrics??? have you checked the dizzy cap for cracks have you checked the timing and spark plug leads its sounding all too familiar to a problem i had on a VS commodore a few years back which after pulling the top off the motor ended up being faulty spark plug leads (only 3 months old).
open the bonnet late at night in a dark place and give it a rev, If you see a spark race amongst your leads then that could be your problem.. Just a thought

Finally got a chance to look at mine today.. First port of call the distributor:- Vacuum advance almost hanging off, tighten it and check for vacuum leaks "all good" check timing :- way too much advance, adjust timing old school retard it and slowely advance it bit by bit after a drive around the block, Turn engine off and restart ahhhhh idles immediatley at 800rpm and sits there (i believe the factory tacho wont be precise) but for now im very happy with the responsiveness and power it has.. I'm off for a bit of a drive tomorrow so I'll jot down some economy figures to compare. hopefully they have improved ten fold.

a major tune up my fuel figures are worse than yours but 35's will do that.. Mine starts fine but revs at 2000 then drops to around 800 and hunts or revs high which ever it decides for the day... my Disco has a demon under the bonnet i am yet to exorcise.. a day off work soon and armed with my workshop full of tools and this forum i know it can and will run smooth again

Move the ign amp from the side of the distributer and put it over on the mudguard with the coil. The new aftermarket ones are crap, and need to be cold.

Can you explain how you did the timing? I'm not sure I follow.

Shaunp, D1 from 1994 MA series, (Serpentine belt engines) ALL have their coils and modules behind LH headlamp area. A big improvement IMO.
