Thread: Radiator Expansion Tank - Discovery 1

When my black one split about 8 years ago while the wife was driving it dumped all the coolant and cooked the engine before the needle moved and the wife stopped, but it was too late. Cost $6000 for a replacement engine.
So I'd definitely recommend getting the white replacement tank, which mine now has.
The system is pressurised to get the coolant up to the top of the engine, so if it loses pressure the top of your engine maybe running hot.
Also, if you hear gurgling under the dash, it may mean you've lost pressure and there is air in the system which is bubbling through the heater, so get it fixed. I speak from recent experience.

I replaced mine about 30 000ks ago and the two plastic plugs, one at the top of the engine /regulator and one in the radiator, both were cross threaded so on advise from a Rover mechanic I replaced the expansion tank and the two plugs with brass plugs

My 95 Classic did in its black expansion tank soon after I bought it... weeps then leaks along the seam.
    - Replaced it with the yellowish/white transluscent one. Kept the original cap, seems to be ok.

Your tank splitting is a great excuse to check/replace every consumable item in the cooling system !

I recently got one made for my D1, a bucket load cheaper tho! Plus I had a fitting tig'd in to accept a low water alarm, and the capacity increased slightly.

So far its working a charm!!!
