    Newbie Questions

Hi all just joined & this is my 1st post, hope you don't mind but have a few questions if I may:

    Just got hold of a 94 Discovery 3.9V8i Auto;

1/ Do they run ok on E10 fuel??.

2/ Cleaning engine with degreaser, any where I shouldn't spay the degreaser.

3/ Auto makes a small clunking noise when changing back but only when cruising slowly up to a set of lights, it's ok at all other times??.

4/ Has a very, very slight howling sound whilst driving similar to tyre noise but it's not??.

5/Rear electric windows won't open/close by door buttons or consoule button, front work fine.

6/ What tyre pressure should I be running (Nankank 205 80/R16) the manual says 28psi front and 38psi rear, the front/rear had 40psi so left rear alone and dropped front to 30psi???.

Have more questions, but won't push my luck on 1st post.

    Thanks in advance
    Rich

Welcome. I can't help with some of your questions, but can offer some answers to some.

    1. Pretty certain they should.

    2. Not specific to that engine, but keep clear of anything electrical.

    3. Probably dragging handbrake. This is a transmission brake on the back of the transfer case, and may be dragging because of incorrect adjustment, seized components, or, most likely, contamination with oil or foreign material. Check if it gets hot after driving a few blocks (careful - easy to burn fingers!).

    4. Probably the transfer case - unlike a two wheel drive, this has gears transmitting power all the time and is right under the driver. Most four wheel drives make some gear noise from this - has to be fairly bad before it is a worry.

    5. Wiring or switch problem - maybe someone has specific knowledge. I doubt they are separately fused, but check.

    6. I can't offer any advance on the manual.

    Hope this helps,

    John

I had 205/80 tyres when I got my Disco and I find the book values are good "all round numbers". In the end though, I think you'll find better performance if you run slightly higher pressures on-road and slightly lower or the book pressures off-road.

I would say running front at 30 and rear at 40 like you have now is quite OK. If anything just put a few more in the front. Then lower both by 5-10 psi when off-road.

Welcome to the forums! Only question back is, PICS??

Regarding the rear windows in the site there is threads on a faulty solder which you can find behind the glove compartment. If you search the forums you should find s very good link to tis issue,

And the clunk coming to a halt is slop in the gear driven transfer as the auto shifts into 1st.
As the mechanics very often say "they all do that"

Have found a good 4x4 wreckers and service guy out at Silverdale in Syd Western Subs so, have booked the old girl in for a full service next Wednesday and a one off, drop all the oils and replace in all trans/diffs whether they need it or not and to check out some of the above issues.

    Will report back when done.

A couple of other issues you may be able to help with.

1/ I need a couple of cans of touch up paint for the dreaded rust around the top of the little windows in the rear but am having no luck at Repco/Supercheap ect.
It is Aspen Silver (ALR 2292), the touch up aerosol cans are RTC 6810A & RTC 6810T (whats the difference between A & T).
Any thoughts on where I can get some.

2/ The lid of the centre consol box is a bit ratty so was thinking of giving it a spray with vinyl paint, any one done this and how did it come up plus what shade of grey paint did you use?

3/ I was following another Disco yesterday and noticed that he had 2 sets of indicators, one set on the bumperbar and the other between the brake & reversing lights, when I got home I checked mine and found that there was empty slots but no globes on either side.
Are they supposed to have blinker lights in those empty slots??.

Pretty sure they are on a crossover model (apologies if I'm way off). I think D1's pre 93 or 94 had indicators in the normal spot in the bodywork - then there was some legislation or rule imposed regarding the visibility of these due to the high mounted spare (not visible from all angles). So Land Rover then started putting them in the bumpers (both locations). From 95 onwards the ones on the body got phased out with only the ones in the bumpers being used. Simon
