I am led to believe that the term came from the Camel trophy mods they did on the Disco.

Plenty of info on it with a search. This will need to be done on any D1 with larger tyres. It is not a hard job and still looks neat. I used a fine disc in the grinder to lop it off.
    Cheers, David.

Also I wondered where the terminology came from.

    Distortion - cheers for that.
That's only because you fitted girls tyres to a defender.

    Umm what Ali ?

Maybe its because Defednder wheel arches are plenty big enough for the perfectly adequate 255/85 tyres I have...
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Ah your made it sound that, on the subject of trimming arches is never needed on a defender.

You should try fitting 36" 12.50" to one. They will need a trim then even 35" 10.50" you will need to trim.

My D1 with a 50mm lift is running LR steels with 245/75/16 MTRs and it didn't need a camel cut, but I did have to adjust the steering lock to stop the tyres rubbing on full lock. Hope that helps.
