And hope it didn't keep running after the rollover.

thats not too dreadful really is it?! I must admit to having had nightmares about engine replacement costs (got rid of my old disco before I got near that point for that very reason). How many proper mechanic hours does it take to do the job?

I lifted the bonnet to see if I could pinpoint the noise, seemed like it was down below the head.
After taking it to my mechanic, who confirmed it was something down the bottom end,I'm now after another engine.

After ringing up my local Landy place at Silverdale,he said a recon engine with all new innards would only cost me $2750.00.
This is WITHOUT any of the associated bits and pieces, just the engine, which is what I'm after.
It will take him a few days to build, but that wont matter to me as I need to save some pennys first.
I had already rang 1/2 doz different 4by places to see if they had an engine, but they didn't.
I will talk to my mechanic next week to see how much it will be to do a change over as I don't have the required tools nor lifting appliance to do it myself.

    cheers

How long is a piece of string?
Depends on the engine and it depends on the mechanic.

I'd be questioning the 'friend' who returned it to you in that state.... Did he not check it, noticed the oil light on, then think 'oops I'd best top that up and take it back'.... His response might give you more info to help pinpoint what's happened. If it is as above, you're prob right with bottom end bearings... If he ran it dry of oil then yes.. Engine it is, if it just got low and has only recently started rattling, you may just get away with shells.. I say 'may' though... There was a Tdi in the markets on here... Has it gone?

Thanks to all the people that have replied to my original post.

The motor has done 297 k's.My mate is not the kind of person that NEVER lifts the bonnet to check that everything is OK.
The car was only bought last year and has only not done that many k's.The engine could have been on its way out before we bought it.Thats one of the problems when buying a used car.You dont know if the engine is going to implode or not.
For the cost of the new engine, that is what we will put into it.It is a lot cheaper to put a new one in it than try to find out what is wrong with the old then repair it.Not sure if we will keep the old engine to strip it down and see what is wrong with it or not yet.

    cheers
