I have done it once on my 300tdi, liberally coated it with gasket goo top and bottom, put it back in and the car drove for about 3000km. Enough time to save the money to buy that head and new gasket I needed.

I don't reckon I would do it again though.

Reasonable amount of time and money to do a block swap... Not to mention skinned knuckles, trips to parts place only to find you forgot something and have to go down again, accidentally damaging something important while removing donk.... Don't be a tight arse (said in a friendly, supportive tone) you don't want to do this all over again in a few weeks do you?

P.S. Just done my head gaskets recently on my V8 3.9l I did all of the above and have been rewarded with a sweet running donk that I won't have to touch again for ages!

    Best of luck.

About 0.030", therefore a slight compression change.
