As I understand it, locking and unlocking with only the key is the easy part, but it means the vehicle is not imobilised and the alarm is not on. To immobilise and alarm requires use of the remote fob.
If you lock it with the fob and then unlock it with only the key the engine won't start because the immobiliser is still on.
Ages ago I was quoted $450 to replace my fob. Fortunately, our two continue to work fine with regular battery replacement.
So, if you're happy using just the key its all good. Otherwise you need a fob.
