Thread: Getting SPARE set of Keys cut for a Disco-1?

My fob doesn't look like the one in the picture, which has two buttons, but mine only has one long button.
As I understand it, locking and unlocking with only the key is the easy part, but it means the vehicle is not imobilised and the alarm is not on. To immobilise and alarm requires use of the remote fob.
If you lock it with the fob and then unlock it with only the key the engine won't start because the immobiliser is still on.
Ages ago I was quoted $450 to replace my fob. Fortunately, our two continue to work fine with regular battery replacement.
So, if you're happy using just the key its all good. Otherwise you need a fob.

    Hey Mick.....

I might be wrong here, but I'm assuming the the LED light on the Dash flashes when the immobiliser is active and obviously not flashing when it's de-activated...... Last night when I got home from work, I locked the car by just using the Key. The LED on the Dash still came on and continued flashing as per normal. I was thinking that maybe this was because I still had the Key-Fob in proximity to the car that this is why the LED still came on when I locked the car via the Key only.....
Will try it again on my day off but this time I'll leave the Key-Fob in the house and see if I get a different outcome

I was referring to this one, which was posted previously.

The one you linked to does look like mine, that's true. So, are there two different types?

Re. the post above about the light on the dash flashing, isn't that for the alarm, not the immobilizer?

    G'day Robmacca

Our 98 D1 SE has the 2 button keyfob and also a spare, the red light on the speedo will flash even if the vehicle is parked unlocked, opening with a key will unlock the car,but not the immobiliser, this feature we use when we have a dog or child in the car,to pay for fuel,we recently had to replace the "spider wire"behind the dash with a genuine LR replacement patch cable, about $85 at M.R.Autos, worth every dollar

Iam up in the Caboolture area so PM me if you want to

    cheers

Yes, the single button remote is used only in the 1995MY D1 ES & the last of the RR Classics.
In 1996, the D1 went to the two button remote, used across the range unless you had a poverty pack.

I've never heard of a 'chipped key' being law - several Discos between 1996 & 1999 didn't even have an immobilizer.
It's an ADR Rule. Trust me, I have to explain this to angry people many times a day when they are told that it is going to be over a hundred bucks to get a key cut.

I couldn't find the exact page listing the ADR, but here is one from the RAC saying the same thing...

Gaining more understanding everyday about LR's

This time I left the car unlocked, put the remote in the house and then went out to try locking/unlocking the car with the key, then to see if it would still start, which it did, no worries.....
Reading the owners manual, apparently there was a metal tag attached to the keys when new that had the code on it, unfortunately that's now nowhere to be seen.....

The batteries in the Remote Door Fobs.... anyone know the type/size of battery? Probably would be good to have a spare inside the car just in case....

That's interesting. Thanks. Seems I have the rarer one.

Same with mine. If I lock it with the remote it will only start with the remote. If I lock it with the key it will start with the key.
