undo the top bolt, pull it apart and clean it all out, while its off , pull the lines of the fuel filter and blow them back with compressed air to clean them out.
Checking the timing"
take the tensioner assembly off of the timing cover, set TDC #4 rocking check the alignment of the crank locking groove in the bellhousing drain and if thats good then the timing pin should slide into the slot in the pump and housing
checking the pushrods'
check the valve adjustment, then when you have it set grab the pushrod, rotats it in place and recheck, much more than a 2 thou change means the rod is damaged you can also look down the hole the rod sits in to and look at it as you turn it you'll see any significant bend
