Tappet sound, sometimes a bit loud - similar to diesel knock. I currently have the tappets set at a very tight .008 and it is still there a little. Still intermittent. I am suspecting the lash caps, although they were replaced, the replacements were crud. Time will tell when I get the hardened VW lash caps.

ok. mine is like a light hammer sound. already ruled out big ends and vacuum pump. almost sounds like its coming from IP. i would find it hard to hear a tappet sound as the injectors are so loud in these things be hard to tell difference. i still think there is something not 100% right in mine but 2 experts have looked at it and they say its fine.

had DeepBarney over last weekend and his 300tdi wihch has done 100k more km than mine sounded quieter and smoother.

Maybe lift pump? It is right next to the IP and mechanical. Mine's a lot quieter in that area since I eliminated it for a facet pump mounted nearer the tank. Even if the lift pump is malfunctioning the engine will still run OK ish.

Empi branded arrived in 2 days probably the same as the US eBay ones

Advanced injection timing can create some strange noises.
Not obvious noises, but if you are looking for them they are there.
Replace lash caps on a 300 tdi today with the empi caps.
#2 exhaust cap was %99 missing.
The noise sounded almost like a bigend bearing and was more noticable on the p/side of the engine bay.

On Monday/Tuesday, I had a reconditioned Transfer case fitted at all4xfour. Talking to the guys there and they said it was noisy. I told them all that I had done and they think it may be diesel knock. So today I pulled the timing belt off as the timing pin does go in, but it is a little tight. Got it all off, advanced (or retarded?) the timing wheel on the injector pump so that I have room to adjust (it was at full adjustment one way). Checked the timing to the nth degree and put it back together so that , when timed, the injector pump has adjustment each way. No change. Remember it has new injectors and a recon injector pump. So I just don't know why the noise. Tomorrow I will redo the tappets as the economy seems to have dived a little.

Are the Lash Caps OEM Land Rover parts, if they are and anything like the ones I bought (OEM Land Rover) then they are less than rubbish, I would recommend Crane Cams lash caps, Regards Frank.
